Summary
Aragorn had truly thought Boromir was dead.
They all did, but especially Aragorn — he was the one who broke the arrows, he was the one who laid his mouth upon his fallen brother-in-arms, his friend, and tried to become as Boromir’s breath, again and again, continually breathing for him, checking for a pulse that wouldn’t come.
Gimli had to pull him off of Boromir’s cooling body. Strong, thick dwarvish hands shaking even as he so firmly pulled Aragorn into a firm hug, red beard wet and shining with his weeping even as he held Aragorn close to him and consoled him, telling him, You’ve done all you can for him, laddie — all you can. By Mahal, I know this is true, lad. You’ve done all you can, and none can do naught for him more. Gently, into Aragorn’s heaving chest, No, not even you, Aragorn.
…a mournful and bitterly sweet laugh barks out of Aragorn’s aching throat as he sits beneath the white tree and weeps, “and yet he lives,” Aragorn whispers to himself, to all of Gondor, to no one in particular. He laughs again, cries even harder,
“And yet he lives.”

Summary
Boromir and Faramir are just two little children when their mother, Finduilas, succumbs to her death. Their father, warm only to the first and cold to the other, becomes yet colder to both within his grief. It is in the wake of Finduilas' death that her brother, a stunned and concerned Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth, knows it is time to intervene on the behalf of the children and their well-being;
He sends a most encouraging letter to the Steward of Gondor, offering to take charge of his sister-sons for a season or two, providing a new and novel ocean coastal scene for the boys to ease their own pain, and himself the opportunity to hold close the last living parts of his sister left on this earth.Denethor obliges, and soon the boys are away to their mother's home and seaside city, Dol Amroth, where they are welcomed into the compassionate arms of family they've never known. And while there, through sneaking off some nights to stargaze along the shore, they come upon a specter of a man singing sad elven songs on the rocks. In time, Boromir will find the man closer to them than he ever could have imagined.
