“You poor thing,” Hermione deadpans, turning to face him. She can still see the smugness in his eyes, and she wants to prod at it, knock him off his little pedestal. He can touch her without a thought, making it look natural. She decides, in a moment of Gryffindor bravery, that she can do it, too.
She runs a consoling hand down his arm and gives him a sardonic look to cover her own fluttering heart. “How ever will you recover?”
His hand catches hers again as it trails over his cuff, and he continues the sweeping movement, stepping closer and wrapping their entwined hands behind her back.
Oh.
He hasn’t been knocked off his pedestal at all. He’s taken her raising of the stakes and bumped them even higher, and she can’t decide if she regrets it or not.
OR
