What had he been thinking? That he could make something like this for Ed? Because it’s something his mother had made? The bar would have to be impossibly high for him to enjoy it, surely. So why—
Even within his own mind, his stream of consciousness collides heavily with a solid, undeniable, unavoidable wall.
Because his mother loved him, Stede thinks. And he loved her. Even if neither of them could say it.
Stede can’t change the past; he can’t fix Ed’s childhood or take away the hurt. But maybe he can bring him back to one of those few, shining, positive moments. Because…
(Why is it so hard to say, even in the privacy of his own mind, he wonders.)

It must be a difference in upbringing. At the orphanage, there was almost never enough to go around, though Melanie was careful to keep that from ever coming across to the kids. Wolfwood was just particularly observant. He grew up knowing the importance of food, how it could make the difference between a day spent in agony and a day spent in comfort. How healthy food felt so much better to make and eat than junk food—how junk food was often so much easier to obtain than healthy food.
Wolfwood’s never seen it as something to earn or revoke at a moment’s notice. Not the way Vash treats it.
