"So this is a Kira shrine," Light says, leaning forward to get a closer look at the jeweled walls.
L nods slowly, "That is true, Light-Kun."

Mello’s stare narrows upon his rival, “You keep using that word… ‘we’.”
“Indeed, Mello,” Near allows the strand of hair to unravel once more from around his fingertip. “I can think of no one better suited for taking over the role of Roger than you.”

"I understand." The answer is mild, clipped. Near is pardoning him for his dead-end argument. Mello grimaces and angles for professionalism instead. "You understand why I'm here?" Near is still smiling, although Mello doesn't recognize what he thinks is amusing.
“Mello is here because he cannot leave the elevator,” Near offers. His attempt at humor fails to amuse even him. Playfulness vanishes gradually, leaving in its stead a sullen, skeletal young man.

Mello is back from the dead. Moments after presenting himself to Near, the two get stuck in an elevator. Tension builds until it implodes.

Summary
Two years after the end of the Kira investigation, Near reluctantly agrees to investigate a series of murders in Denver. What he's expecting is a dull, uninteresting case that he'll solve before the plane has even landed. Instead, he gets a killer who seems to have no rhyme or reason to their actions yet somehow evades capture anyway and still has time to send him cryptic messages with horrible grammar.
Mello has been lying low for the past two years, but when he hears about the serial murders, he heads to the city to investigate. Normally, he wouldn't bother, but there's something different about this case— Near may be in more danger than he realizes.
Not that Mello actually cares. That would be ridiculous.
