It’s said so softly, so gently, and if this was one of Siobhan’s movies, they wouldn’t be talking about the money or drinks at all, they’d be talking about something clenching around Lena’s chest, something stifling, a loneliness that paralyzes her bones.
“Don’t blame me when you lose,” Lena says with a gentle upturn of her mouth, her voice low and crackling, leaving a fifty-dollar bill on the bartop before she turns away.

The phrase feel your body said in Kara’s voice rattles around in Lena’s head like a pinball machine, but she manages to shrug her sweater off and throw it somewhere behind them before she can second-guess herself. Kara is looking comfortable in a loose white t-shirt, and when she takes Lena by the waist and puts Lena’s hand on her shoulder the texture of it is light and soft.
“Let’s start from square one,” Kara says, so kindly that her next words take a few seconds to register in Lena’s brain. She tightens her grip on Lena’s waist, and says with full confidence:
“Dancing is a lot like sex.”

Somehow she already knows that calling back isn’t going to work out in her favor, so instead she closes her eyes and clicks on the voicemail.
“Hi Lena, this is Kara Danvers! I got your messages, all seven of them. I’m so sorry that we didn’t have a chance to sit down this week in person, although it sounds like you’ve had your hands full at work. I have some stuff I need to take care of before we leave, so I’ll have to meet you at the airport. Since I’m cutting it a little close, I’ll send a courier to pick up my ticket from you this afternoon. And Lena? Take a deep breath. This is all going to be fine. Lena’s response is knee-jerk. “None of your damn business.”
Supergirl runs her fingers through her hair. It sticks up wildly near her temple, and Lena can see a slight cowlick. It’s strangely humanizing. “Look, my boss isn’t going to like that I’m working with an unknown as it is. If we’re going to work together, I at least need something to call you.”
When Lena shakes Supergirl’s hand, she feels the warmth of victory when the hero seems shocked at the firmness of her grip. But alarmingly an even stronger warmth radiates from their joined palms, spreading up her arm; Lena pulls her hand back faster than what’s generally considered polite, curling it into a fist.

Summary
The woman stops her pacing, setting her pale and unevenly-coloured eyes on Kara, and in that moment Kara understands - for the very first time - how Helen of Troy’s face could have been beautiful enough to start a war.
“Enough. I’m tired of being passed from one person to the next. Tell me,” the woman says fiercely after Kara has been quiet for too long. “Who are you?”
“I’m, um,” Kara says, wiggling her feet until they’re buried in the sand up to the ankle. “I’m Kara.”
The woman stares at Kara, incredulous and silent. It stretches out between them, those lingering questions and Kara’s unwillingness to answer them, until finally her shoulders sink and she deflates with a small, disbelieving laugh.
“Right. Well, I’m Lena,” she says, finally seeming to realize her dress is torn and pulling it tighter, "and if you don’t mean me harm, then I suppose you just saved me.”
