Summary
It's not uncommon for soldiers to have powers. It's also not uncommon for those powers to be dangerous.
But there's dangerous, and then there's Agent Washington's volatile, mutated power.
Memories, electricity, both coursed through his nerves and pierced his soul.
Better to bury that power. Implosions did less damage than an explosion. A tomb of armor under lock and key to bury that power. And bury Washington with it, of course.
A necessary evil.
Then Sidewinder happened. And for the first time in years, Washington felt the wind on his face as they cut away the damaged pieces of his armor. Of the prison holding him together. And Tucker wasn't nearly as bothered as he should have been by the lightning that followed.
It wasn't so easy to treat yourself like a person after so long spent thinking you were a bomb.
As it would turn out, he and Tucker may have had more in common than Wash thought.

You'd think that saving the world meant that the ninja knew how to function in public spaces long enough to make a purchase.
Unfortunately for whatever poor sap owns the pumpkin patch on the city outskirts, that is a naive hope-- soon to be dashed on the rocks and ground into a fine powder.
Because if these ninja do know how to behave themselves, they certainly don't show it.
It's worth getting banned, surely.
After all, it was in the name of... science, probably.

Absolutely fantastic story. Wonderful exploration of Wash, Epsilon, and especially Epsilon's fragments. There's some really creative use of AO3 work skins here to help tell the narrative in an unconventional way that was a huge inspiration to me. I adore the tone of this; things are bad, and the characters are stressed to hell and back, they're scared and angry and whatever else, and they're snippy and rude to each other at times, but all the protagonists are, in the end, good, flawed people that make each other stronger and inspire each other. It's a wonderful deconstruction of what makes Wash tick as someone that, despite having been fucked over so many times, somehow always manages to get back up. It's a wonderful arc for Epsilon, who has his own burdens regarding just who and what he is.
There are also a lot of small details that really make the story for me-- a fantastic attention to detail. The one I realized most recently was the implications of Delta representing both logic and justice. I thought "an eye for an eye" was already a really cool premise to apply to him, but when I remembered Delta's association to York, the detail became SO much more interesting. The entire fic is full of moments like this. All without ever getting too serious or being too much of a downer. It still feels like RVB, albeit one of the more serious episodes of RVB, and I applaud it for that. This fic has my full recommendation.

This work especially stands out to me for some great visceral descriptions of Wash's experiences, from getting hit by the Warthog to how he reacts to nightmares to what it's like when he sees what happened to him. The way everyone around him reacts to it all is interesting to see, and I'm especially partial to Tucker and Grif's interaction. Has some morbidly funny jokes in there as well. Overall great read.

Summary
The most Tucker has ever heard about tombs has been in old Bible stories. Mainly the one about Jesus. But in those stories, the people never stayed in their tombs. They always got up and left.
Technically, you could say the desert temple was a tomb. But it wasn't CT who killed Tucker the first time.

Fantastic character study of Tucker with an interesting twist on the events as we know them. A fic where most of the conflict wouldn't happen if Tucker were just a bit more open and a bit more cooperative, but that's hard when you're Lavernius Tucker! He really is his own worst enemy, but it's really easy to see how and why he thinks like he does. His dynamic with Washington especially is really interesting to read as he deals with both the loss of his best friend and this new guy that won't leave him alone just because he's out doing dangerous and stupid stuff.
