Her tiny body wanted to weep, cry, wail for her Bruce as he gently pulled her into his arms. Hot tears cooled on her cheeks. She wanted to tell him everything, how much she missed him even though she'd never met him before, even though he had no idea who she was.
"Mb-bh—" she tried, as Batman settled her against his chest, wrapping her in the cape. Her lips felt unwieldy, thick and numb. "Bhu— brr—"
But she'd practiced. She'd practiced his name so many times, every night since she fled the man who'd created her, since she saw the life she once had will have flash through her mind as though remembering a long, long dream. But it wasn't a dream. It was her past, and also her future.
She refused to wait for it.

“-Please.”, Marvel interrupted, which was something he had never dared to do before. Not to Batman. It was as he continued that Bruce realized the arm beneath his fingers was shaking, “Please not Superman- I couldn't handle it if it was him. Not again.”
The anguish swimming in his bright blue eyes nearly sucked Bruce in, letting him be enveloped in the pain and loss that was barely being held in. Then the words caught up to him and Bruce frowned.
“Captain… what do you mean, again?”

Everyone else seemed to think that Gotham was "a total shithole" and "the closest thing to hell on earth."
Billy wasn't convinced because, statistically speaking, Gotham had a pretty high concentration of extremely cool people.
Nightwing and Red Robin were both from Gotham.
So was Black Canary.
And, of course, it was home to Batman.
It couldn't be that bad.

“Anyway, that’s enough about me. The main mystery is why you’re still here.” Never let it be said that Danny was not the master of a good conversational segue. With a swish of his finger, he telekenetically pulled a floating pen and notepad closer to him and flipped to a blank page. “So, we can rule out violent death for one.”
Alfred’s unflappability continued to amaze Danny because he didn’t do much more than just blink before regaining his bearings and moving on. “I’d say that’s a good assumption to make.”
“Did you swear vengeance on anybody?”
A wry smile. “One could make the case that I served Vengeance, yes, but no.”
“Uh-huh…were you cursed?”
“Does that happen?”
“You’d be surprised. Major regrets or unfulfilled wishes?”
“Some, but none that I would think would tether me to the mortal realm.”
“Unfinished business?”
“Afraid not.”

“—To Lois Lane," Bruce interrupts, still staring out the window.
Bruce’s interruption has the entire table falling silent, faces genuinely falling, mouths snapping closed. Clark doesn’t really understand why anyone would need the clarification.
