Summary
There are strange machines that sit untouched in the middle of the streets. Kaveh had passed them many times, and for each passing his curiosity had only grown. They were large, looming monuments. They bore the marks of weathering from the natural elements, but no such hint of human touch despite their clearly man made nature. As if the metal were organic, it sprouts from the roads wholly indifferent to the destruction surrounding it. They sit, silent and waiting.
Aria’s mother, Ava, had only told Kaveh that they were some kind of Sarkaz weapon, though this was only an approximation. Before her passing, Ava had left him with a warning to never approach those machines: “There is nothing of value to be learned from those things. It is best to leave their secrets within to suffocate and die.”
To be discovered tampering with Khaenri’ahn weapons was grounds for a lifetime exile in Sumeru. Kaveh ponders this as he stands before a contraption unlike anything he’d ever seen in Teyvat, and reaches his hands down into its guts once more.
Life in Terra is much harder than life in Teyvat, and Kaveh learns to hold onto hope with bloodied fists.

A gaudy, and obtrusive thing he found to be annoying at best and painfully distracting at worst. Sometimes if he stared at it long enough the red would start to darken and begin to drip. The android would hear a faint splash and look down-

-and he would be in that kitchen, watching Will try and fail to stop Abigail’s bleeding. Watching as the man’s expression grew more panicked, his actions become more panicked.

Being the younger brother of an infamous thief isn't really all it's cracked up to be, especially when said older brother/thief insists that Varian stay behind and wait while he has all the fun scaling towers and stealing crowns. Not that it was particulalry unexpected; it wouldn't be the first time, and it certainly wouldn't be the last.
It would, however, be the first time his waiting was inturrupted by a creepy lady and a manic horse.
