She frowns.
The ad is for a relief lighthouse keeper. She tentatively scrolls down to look at the duties and requirements, fully expecting to find that she’s unsuited for the job.
Except she’s kind of… perfect for it?
Unmoored, a little lost, and always impulsive, she thinks fuck it and spends the next three hours fixing her resumé, digging for her certification details, and writing an overly enthusiastic cover letter.

Beatrice didn’t pray to God anymore. She didn’t feel that there was much point, especially when she didn’t know if she was on good terms with the deity anyway. If it truly was God who had taken Ava from her, most of the prayers would likely end up as demands for them to send her home.
Instead, she prayed to Ava.

The saying is corny as fuck, but Ava can appreciate the sentiment all the same.

Across the table, the woman sighed. She put her laptop away and left her backpack on the seat beside her. She strolled towards Beatrice with a smile on her lips. She extended a hand for Beatrice to shake. "Ava," the woman said.
There was a noticeable tremble on Beatrice's hands, but the woman's were firm and tender at the same time. She squeezed as Beatrice said her name.
“Beatrice," she repeated and swallowed, eyes brightening and watering as if the name had tasted almost too sweet for her. "I suggest we spend the rest of our lives together if you'd like, but there is a request - just one - I need to make." Beatrice quirked a brow, feeling her palm gather sweat. "May we kiss just before the world ends?”

“We’ve met before,” Beatrice croaked out. She couldn’t remember - not particularly well - but she knew. She knew that sunny smile and those warm eyes and a promise of meeting again.
“Have we?” Ava asked, not teasing, just genuinely curious.
“Not here,” she clarified, the words coming out without any conscious choice. “Another life. Another time.”
Ava’s eyes crinkled as she smiled, a small, warm, familiar thing. “I see,” was all she said, but Beatrice intrinsically knew that Ava believed her. That she trusted her. “Then I hope we meet again, in our next lives.”

Summary
When Beatrice Zhao, aspiring art conservator, gets the news that her employer won’t sponsor her work visa, she has to make a decision: return to England and subject herself to the purview of her overbearing (and homophobic) parents or try something reckless, desperate, and most certainly illegal.
Ava Silva’s main concerns are:
i) getting out of swim practice early
ii) making it to her volunteer shift on time
iii) what to eat for dinner
That is until her friend Camila shows up with a huge favor to ask.--
“Bea.” Ava tilts forward to take her hands. “You are literally one of the most interesting people I have ever met.” Beatrice opens her mouth but Ava pushes on. “I have loved getting to know you over these past weeks and I can’t wait to deceive the American government with you. I am all in.”
