Summary
Years of working in a teaching hospital primed Robby for answering a variety of unexpected things. There are no stupid questions. Every question asked is an opportunity to learn. Valuable bits of information will be unlocked in life simply from being unafraid to ask for them.
The philosophy is sound. Until Dennis and Jack start asking questions and decide Robby's an idiot who's giving all the wrong answers. He has to get through to them that there are some things in life you just don't want to know.

They stare at each other. It’s awkward, though that might be Dennis’s imagination as Robby seems wholly unaffected. Graciously, Robby simply sighs. All wistful and frustrated, lips turning down at Dennis as he huffs through his nostrils. His skin is so soft, smooth, and void of the stress and wrinkled exhaustion. Dennis misses it, just a tad. Though it feels nice to know a version of Robby who doesn’t carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.
“Yeah, well, let’s hope I don’t accidentally sever an important one. Benton might scruff me.”
He says, shrugging as he tosses the book aside. He leans back to kick his legs out. Stretched clean across the bed with heavy eyes, his colorful tie falls off to the side as he groans. He’s far too fancied up to be regular Robby as well, everything about him seems to spiral in opposite directions. That’s when Dennis catches a glimpse of the embroidered title on his lab coat.
John Carter.
Dr Carter.
Carter.
Or
Dennis wakes up in a strange hospital, unsure of how he got there, with a very young looking Robby. Who, isn’t Robby… and would like to kiss him?

“You know, we should make a pact!” Jack slurs, already reaching the drunken state in the redhead’s college dorm.
“I think you’re too drunk to be allowed to make one?” Robby laughs as he drinks another bottle of beer, wheezing when Jack starts to hiccup, ignoring the resident as he continues to speak.
“When we turn 40, and both of us are still single, we should get married!” Jack chippers, not even aware that Robby turns sober at his statement.
Robby has been harboring feelings for Jack ever since Jack was the new MS3 in PTMC for his ER rotation while he was an R2. They hit it off immediately and become attached to the hip.
Or; Robby and Jack navigate through life where it seems like the world is conspiring against them both. A drunken decision with sober feelings may be the only thing that holds on hope for the two men who refuses to break the bond—when they both want so much more.

“I’m- I can’t convince myself to commit to a longer stay,” Robby admits, frustrated by it. “It’d be better for actually getting somewhere with antidepressants, I know, but I feel like once I take away the work and the bike and everything else I do… there’s a clock on how long I can be naked like that. When it runs out, if I’m not back on the right side, I’ll get stuck as nothing, forever.” Robby drops his face into his hand. “Why does this sound like The Little Mermaid?” he moans.
“Is this the kind of place where they throw a black bag over your head and smash your SIM card, or can I still talk to you?” Jack asks.

Dennis takes a deep breath in to calm himself, but as he breathes out, he confesses, “Trinity made a bet with Samira that I could get anyone in the bar to buy me a drink because I kind of have a knack for it, but Samira chose you, and now they’re watching us, and I’m so sorry.”
His boss blinks at him a couple of times, probably figuring out the least problematic way to fire him or berate him for being so damn unprofessional. He should’ve just said no to Trinity and Samira and killed the vibes for the night; he’d prefer that to whatever Robby is about to say. He can already see the anger bubbling up inside him that’s going to—
“I’ll buy you a drink.”
Dennis stares at him, unblinking. After a few seconds, he manages to ask, “What?”
“I’ll buy you a drink,” Robby repeats, then leans over to pat the bar stool next to him. “But you’re going to have to earn it.”

“Waiting on a drink, same as you.” Robby was shocked to see his student but managed to keep the emotion from his face. He could see that Whitaker was struggling with finding his boss standing beside him.
“I just meant that this doesn’t seem like your kind of place.”
Robby chuckled,”Which part, the club scene or that it’s a gay bar?”

Robby thought Jack didn't want him. There was no acknowledgement of the soul mark and he saw Jack flirting. It's the final straw that broke him.
