His voice drops low and his expression softens, trying his best to soothe you despite the maelstrom in his mind. “Easy,” he starts. ”I’m not going to hurt you. Look at me. It’s me, okay? It’s Jack. Just me. I’m here. Baby, what happened?”
Your eyes are glassy, gaze distant, and at first, you don’t say anything at all. You just stare at him blankly, as if you’re looking right through him. It takes you a moment to register that he’s speaking to you, that you’re meant to answer. You blink a few times, seeming to struggle to formulate a response.
“It’s cold,” is all you manage to say.
It feels like he’s been punched in the gut.

Summary
Jack Abbot and the reader used to be in a relationship which ended with him trying to protect her career but he's never stopped caring about her. When he realises she's in pain while they're on shift together, he tries to get her to open up, worried about what may have happened.
What has happened is worse than he could ever imagine - but he will push down his wallowing because her wellbeing is far more important. He needs her to understand that she isn't dealing with it alone.
