Three years after domestic violence left her scarred inside and out, Ksenia Gilabel is doing fine for herself. Sure, she dropped out of Music & Performance at the University of Oghma, but she’s not just some dropout. She runs the weekly karaoke night at local pub The Harpers, works as a server and is learning to take the whole place over when current owner Jaheira retires. She works with Jen, Karlach and Astarion, friends who are so close they may as well be family. She’s even returning to U-O part time to get the business skills needed to run the venerable old pub that has given so much to her.

The parchment is expensive. Tav runs her fingertips over the wax seal and hesitates; she knows what this is. She is not surprised that it is happening, she is, however, surprised at being included in some way. Perhaps, she allows herself, she had hoped it wouldn't be so soon. (She has already put to bed the part of herself that had hoped it would not happen at all.) Gale had, after all, been very clear - and devastatingly gentle - in his explanation.

Enough to have let Tara coddle her those first few days. Enough to have sobbed into Morena Dekarios’ waiting arms. Enough to speak to him every evening from the balcony he had promised they would share. Enough to have started reading each of his books, knowing his fingers had touched every page. Enough to imagine all the ways he might’ve reacted to the news of his impending fatherhood. The latter she lingers on more than she would like, for it only gives way to other, saccharine fantasies she knows will never come to fruition.
