Even after all was said and done, even after the speeches and the fires and the little bows they tied around the wrapped-up presents, there will always be someone to find what you left behind and tear the paper right off the box.
Jeremy Fitzgerald, after dying and finding their little slice of not-quite-Heaven, realizes that not every present is meant to be opened.

“I’ve got a plan,” Mikey’s eyes lit up slightly, but Jeremy shook his head. “No no no, don’t give me those eyes, you’re gonna hate my plan.”
“As long as it gets her off my ass, I’m fine with it.”
Jeremy took a deep breath, willing his heart to slow down. At least a little bit. At least at a normal pace to make him look like a normal person. When that didn’t work, he had to settle on hoping Mikey wouldn’t notice anything off. Once he decided he was reasonably calm, or at least calm enough not to explode, he held his hand out for Mike to take.
He just stared at it.
“What.”
“Pretend to be my boyfriend.”
“WHAT.”

J’onn floated into the room with a datapad in hand. “The system already recognizes him as an active member.”
“You already added him?” Hal asked Bruce incredulously. “We just had this discussion.”
Bruce looked down at the datapad in hand. “Is that a problem? I knew you’d be adding him.”
Barry let out a disbelieving laugh. “So you argued against it…while already putting him in the system?”
“I argued against it,” Bruce corrected, “but the outcome was inevitable.” He stood and turned toward the console. “Orientation begins in five minutes,” he said, already moving—like the conversation had ended whether they agreed or not.
Barry looked like he might actually short-circuit. “Five minutes?” he repeated, voice pitching up. “We just found out he’s already—he’s in the system, Batman!”
Batman has always believed distance keeps people safe. Then Nightwing starts working alongside him again, and suddenly the careful line between them begins unraveling in front of the entire Justice League.
What starts as quiet suspicion slowly becomes impossible to ignore: Batman and Nightwing aren’t just partners. Bruce just isn’t ready for everyone else to realize it yet.

Summary
To put it very succinctly: Clark Kent was bizarre.
It wasn’t the first impression of the man, but rather the accumulation of all the pieces that led Bruce to that conclusion. On first impression, Clark Kent was inexplicably bland. Slumped posture, timid presence, suit from the bargain bin’s last call section. His glasses were slightly bent, and his hair was objectively a mess. His accent was from the midwest, his manners from the last century. Overall, an unremarkable man.
Or: Bruce Wayne meets Clark Kent for the first time. Bruce tries to unwind the mystery that is this seemingly unassuming reporter.
