But A-Yuan had wailed, snatched the toy and bag out of Lan Jingyi’s hands, settled himself in Wangji’s lap and refused to leave.
“What is wrong?” he’d asked, gentle as he could be, because A-Yuan was clinging to Wangji’s shirt with one chubby fist while the other still grasped his toy bag to his chest.
“A-Yuan’s toys,” the boy whispered back, fat tears clinging to his eyes.
A-Yuan, Wangji realised belatedly, did not like to share.

Neither is Lan Zhan. You don’t see him making such a fuss about it.
The thing that makes all of it worse — the thing Lan Zhan will never admit to his uncle, is rather reluctant to admit even to himself, because it’s fine, it really is, he’s fine — it that Lan Zhan does want. A family. He wants what his brother has, except maybe with one less partner in the mix. Ultimately, he’d like to be — in a relationship.
The problem is, relationships don’t really seem to want him.
