“I’m glad you’re okay,” Al-Haitham says, throwing a sideways glance at Kaveh as he turns back towards his stack of essays. “It would’ve been pretty embarrassing to die in a library.”

    “Fuck you,” Kaveh coughs.

“Sad and alone,” Al-Haitham drones, “amongst rows of old, racist philosophers.”

Kaveh groans, finally having caught his breath for the most part. “You,” he says, his voice still raspy, “are the most annoying person I’ve ever met.”

    Al-Haitham snorts. “An honor.”

“Why does it not–” Kaveh’s voice ripped out in a whine. “Have you not thought about it at all since then?”

A long pause. The longest one yet. “Who says I haven’t?”

Lightning flashed through the window, illuminating Al-Haitham’s face. Half of it was still wrapped in shadow, blocked by Kaveh’s head, but he could see the distance between them measured, laid flat by the light. The lightning went. The room went dark. But the memory of Al-Haitham’s wide eyes did not leave him.

    What did he want?

    “Have you?” asked Kaveh.

“Have you?” Al-Haitham’s voice was so quiet, buried under the murmur of the rain.

Kaveh swallowed. “I mean…I thought that was obvious.”

Kaveh accidentally sleeps with Al-Haitham. And then...keeps sleeping with him.

Bound Role: Unnamed male NPC of the Veritas Prime star system, age 0. 】

【 Congratulations! Welcome to Apocalypse: Star Rail, version ██! 】

Well. If these idiot developers can’t take constructive criticism, Veritas might as well construct the criticism himself… by forcibly inserting himself into a plot where he’s never existed.

“Oh, right – Alhaitham.” Kaveh claps a hand to his forehead. “Cyno, if you see him at the Akademiya tomorrow, don’t mention this to him, would you? I haven’t told him yet.”

“Told him?” Cyno asks slowly, a wary glint in his eye. “What exactly haven’t you told him?”

“That I’m getting married,” Kaveh grimaces. “I wanted to tell him myself – I suppose I do want him at the wedding after all, you know – but I didn’t get a chance yet. You know what it’s like, trying to have a conversation with him.”

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
Kaveh is a single man. That's about it, really.

Kaveh freezes. The desk suddenly feels too real beneath his hands. Blood. Large. Dried. Old enough to no longer glisten, fresh enough to unsettle.

His mind races. Alhaitham—was he hurt? Badly? Is that why the office is deserted? Why Panah’s been dodging every question like arrows? Why the House of Daena, heart of Sumeru’s intellect, now beats in silence?

    His voice comes low.

    “What happened here?”

In which someone makes an attempt on the Acting Grand Sage's life, and Kaveh finds out about it after the fact.

Alhaitham wakes up with amnesia. The hows and whys of waking up with amnesia don’t seem to concern him as much as trying to figure out what the deal between him and his very attractive roommate is. Meanwhile, Kaveh has been saddled with an amnesiac roommate, many questions about how he ended up with an amnesiac roommate, and more than one love confession from the very same amnesiac roommate.

For the sake of his sanity, he’ll ignore that third thing.

He ignores the foreboding emotion brewing in his chest and picks up his tool again, this time letting the bristles flow on the canvass to render the serpentine body of the dragon, and the dull green gem sitting on the centermost of its upper chest. The harsh lines of its leathery wings follow, their tips attenuating to the whetted margins of its claws.

This is utterly ridiculous. Dragons are supposed to be extinct decades ago, years before he was even born, but the one in his dream is so vivid he's afraid he will wake up one morning to the fangs and drooling maw of the chimeric creature, posed to devour him whole.

Kaveh's dreams are persistently haunted by a creature long known to be extinct.

The Duke Alhaitham decides to make it his problem, too.

There are much greater things than Al-Haitham in Kaveh's destiny.

Sometimes all it takes is ten years.

When Alhaitham finally spoke up again, his words were firm and to the point: “It seems to me that you’re living in a prison of your own making.”
    Kaveh’s eyes widened. “How so?”
“You spent your whole life caged by your duties as a prince, yet right now, to all effects and purposes, you are dead.” Alhaitham argued, his voice neutral yet there was a determination in his voice. “There’s no reason for you to be caged to it forever, since dead men are not bound by duties — in a sense, being dead to the world is a form of freedom.”
The very notion was enough to make Kaveh’s mind spin for a moment.

After an assassination attempt, Prince Kaveh found himself under the care of a stranger.

    .

An unnatural silence claimed the Ashavan Realm. For three days, no one who went to investigate had returned.

Sent to uncover the truth, Alhaitham is pulled into a collision of corrupted leylines, forgotten gods, and memories etched deep into the bones of the desert itself. What he uncovers is not merely a disaster, but a legacy, one tied to ancient love, divine ambition, and a debt left unpaid across centuries.

History does not forget its architects. And it does not forgive its heirs.
