Summary
Ryland Grace lived his whole life wondering why his soulstring stretched out all the way to the sky. It took him a one-way ticket to Tau Ceti, another one-way ticket to Erid, and a special delivery in the form of a bloody submarine to finally learn the answer. It is strange, though, how his soulmate never seems to address their soul string but has a habit of staring deep into his eyes.
AKA; A soulmate AU where Simon arrives on Erid five years after Grace did. The two of them learn how to heal from the past and feel excitement for a future they never expected to have. First two chapters are about Simon's arrival to Erid but the rest focuses on their personal growth, developing feelings for each other, and understanding of how soulmate systems works.

Simon is paused awkwardly by the table, one arm half outstretched as if ready to take Grace's mug at any moment and replace it with more perfect coffee somehow.
Grace swallows. "It's perfect."
You really remembered? he doesn't say. It didn't quite hit him earlier and it feels like a sucker punch to the gut now. Simon remembers how he takes his coffee after years of no contact when his last failed situationship a mere six months ago could barely remember that Grace wasn't his first name.

The Eridians stared at me and at each other at the same time (they’re good at multitasking). Then, carefully, as if afraid of overstepping, Larry stood taller and asked “Grace nesting, question?”
And thus, the misunderstanding saw the light of… well, of the artificial biodome lights the Eridian engineers crafted for me.
I knew the Eridians referred to various bed-related activities as nesting. Rocky called me nesting when I brought various blankets and soft things to my bed back on the Mary. But nesting could also mean cuddling up with one’s mate, cleaning the bedroom area and more. I’d assumed they meant the cleaning part.
(Big mistake. Big. Huge! as Julia Roberts would kindly remind me.)
“Yeah, you could say that,” I replied.

“I’m not staring, Rocky! I was just – spacing out,” Simon worried his lip, looking back down at his research. Glancing back up to see if Simon had overheard. If he had, that didn’t stop him from continuing his own work; Simon had become obsessed with the mechanics of the ship, fixing everything he could. Which was great, considering Grace was a man of science himself. Hardly knew how to change his tires, really. Simon paused, scratching at the gills on the side of his neck. He had been doing that every few minutes, grimacing.
“Simon, are your gills bothering you?” Grace couldn’t help himself.
“So you were staring then, angel?” Simon huffed, not taking his eyes away from what he was working on.

Grace’s face flushed and he shoved at Rocky’s ball while the man cocked his head to the side, fully confused by the whole sight.
“Shut up, man,” he hissed at his best friend, making Rocky cackle.
“Again, I’m sorry! Look, we haven't met anyone else out here for ages. You’re kind of a miracle to us.”
“You’re kind of an angel to me,” the man then said, voice rough.
