一开始也只是一些小细节，一些很小的事物。那些用废弃衣物制成的绷带、小半瓶蒸馏水、针与线、以及更多的剪刀，在他们艰难穿越法国到达阿格诺的路途中，当Gene不可避免地失去它们时，偶尔会有一些这样的野战装备被回收，由士官们——通常是Grant 或者 Lip——像交付黄金一样珍重地交到Gene手里。起初，Gene并没有多想。他全身心地投入于确保全连一半的人不会染上肺炎或者累倒，但是当Lip一而再、再而三地把一小堆补给送来时，Gene起疑了。
Gene并不总是知道如何看待 E连的新指挥官。

“Are you a vampire?” he asked as the guy reached out to the bricks and grabbed on with his claws, heaving himself up with one arm to the wall.
The guy didn’t even look at him, "No."
“You have fangs. And claws. And - and red eyes!” Miles said, walking up the wall after him.
“Spiders also have all of those things,” the guy said, flatly.
“Spiders have red eyes?”
The guy paused for a moment and then shrugged, “…Okay — eyes, I don’t know.”

Miles turns to him. He's visibly confused, brows scrunched up and mouth crooked, "You don't like Gwen?" He asks.
Hobie shoves his hands into his vest pockets and leans back on his heels, "Can't really say that's my area of expertise." His feet click when he lands back on them, flat.
Miles blinks at him, "Oh. Oh." He says dumbly.
Hobie smirks, "Mhm," he says simply, "How 'bout you? You fancy Gwenny?" He asks. There's something almost taunting in his tone, like he already knows the answer to his question. Miles envies him for that.

Or; Hobie visits Miles every week to keep up on the TV show they've been watching. One night, things don't go as planned, feelings get revealed, and Miles only has to do mild damage control.
