“Everyone but you does, Rue. She's probably the one of the most successful actresses in the last five years.” Lexi is rubbing her temples now, it’s not an uncommon sight when she’s conversing with her closest friend.
“Oh.” Is all Rue can muster up, and then— “Does that mean you have her number?” Her lopsided grin punctuates the sentence.
Lexi looks back up at Rue in disbelief. “Kill me now.”

Rue Bennett has a system for most things.

She has not been able to build a system for this.
At twenty-one, she has never kissed anyone. She knows why. The understanding has not solved the problem. So she does what she always does — researches, makes a plan, finds the most controlled version of the thing she needs.
The woman who arrives is not what she expected.
She goes by Luxé. She sits at the far edge of the bed. She asks what she should know before she assumes anything. When Rue tells her, she doesn’t produce the face. She just says: it makes sense.
And then she asks about the arctic terns.
The Distance and the Return is a story about learning what closeness feels like when your nervous system has never had the chance — told in the specific language of two people who both needed somewhere no one knew their name.

I shift, not really wanting the day to end, “Want to come up?” I try. “I’ll find a horror movie that will actually make you jump.”
Maddy laughs. “You don’t need to put on scary movies to get me close to you, Rue—”
I’m lost for words. My face heats up, “That’s not—
“—I’m a cuddler as you can tell.” She finishes.
Oh. I think. So, she knows we were basically tangled into each other this morning. I chew on my bottom lip, my mind about to go into over drive.
“You’re doing that thing.” She tells me.
“Yeah sorry.” I give an awkward laugh. “You cuddle with all your friends, I’m guessing…”
Maddy phones begin to blow up, and she looks at it and roll her eyes while saying, “No. I don’t like sharing beds during sleepovers.” My eyes widen. “I have to go, unfortunately.” She leans over and gives me a hug, “Good night, Rue.”
I pull the pillow Maddy was using and fall into a dream that includes hues of purple and whispers of ocean wave promises.
