Tom Marvolo Riddle was a wizard of the highest caliber, unmatched in intelligence, wit and smartassing. After graduating Hogwarts, running away from the horribly racist social circles he got caught up in and hopping from one Mastery to another abroad he only has a handful of fantastic breakthroughs and a Mastery in Magical History to show for his efforts.
Coming back home he did what any sensible wizard trying to avoid the wizarding community would do: Go Muggle!
When Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (Order of Merlin, Headmaster of Hogwarts, Grand Sorcerer, Supreme Mugwump, and adoptive father of Tom Riddle) shows up in his little muggleish hideout and offers him a job as Professor Tom agrees, albeit reluctantly. Eventually that too would become a tedious affair, he was sure it was only a matter of time.
