Shrue had built their platform on being a model member of the community, a local, a “family man.” But the more they invested in their work, the further that image seemed to be from the truth, and no number of reiterations to the press that they’d “grown up around the water” could detract from how far downstream the currents had carried them. The prestige of their position and the duties that came with it had spilled out over their world like an oil slick; a glimmering fetid iridescence that choked out all life beneath the surface.
Of course, this was all assuming they even had a family.
[Yet another character study of my favourite politician, focusing on their complacency, alcoholism and of course their Shruedinger's family.]

[NON-FICTION FANWORK] Dungeon Meshi is full of vivid and complex world-building. When you take all the information in the manga as a whole, there are clear and consistent patterns in what real world cultures the author was inspired by, and how she arranges them on the Dungeon Meshi world map.
In this essay, I will catalog and explain every real world cultural reference I was able to identify in the manga, including character and location names, historical and mythological references, clothing, and of course food!
WARNING: This essay is full of spoilers for the entire Dungeon Meshi manga, all the extra materials, and the anime. Disturbing and violent moments that happen in the series are described, discussed and analyzed. The essay also discusses real-life world history and mythology, which contains sensitive subjects like war, death, slavery, abortion, child killing, sexual assault, incest, and bestiality. Fall's coming to an end and there is a lot on Emil's mind, as there always is. His sister has gotten her prosthetics surgery and, while he is still terrified of when it will be his turn to replace his body with metal and wires, he cannot deny there is something about the joy she has with her new body that he envies. Although, in all honesty, he has envied her for a long time, it is just harder to ignore now. Stuck in the mindset of there being two worlds, one he is allowed to experience and one he should never long for, Emil struggles with his gender and seeks out advice on how to come to terms with things.
