Summary
How did Holly Munro come to be the perfectionist, slightly neurotic individual we see in the books? Why did she train to become an agent? How did she join Rotwell? There's so little of her backstory in canon. Here's my (completely invented) take on her life before Lockwood and Co. These are snippets from Holly's childhood and young adulthood, revealing key formative experiences that shaped her into the character we know.
Excerpt from Ch. 8: Ranged around the iron circle were the ghostly figures of seven massive hounds. They were powerfully built, with barrel-chests and muscular limbs coated in thick, coal-black fur. Their baleful eyes gleamed red, and their open mouths revealed a multitude of razor-sharp, yellowed teeth. As Holly watched, greenish drool dripped from the slavering jaws of the dog closest to her and oozed, hissing, to the cellar floor. There was a moment of stillness as the hounds considered them with cocked heads, their blood-red tongues lolling.

He really didn't know what had come over him. The council was just being so damn annoying lately, pushing him to marry every eligible noble lady in the vicinity. Like any normal person, Arthur finally snapped. It all went downhill when he blurted out that Merlin was his husband in the middle of a council meeting. He can't marry those ladies if he's already married to Merlin, right?? All he and Merlin have to do is keep up the lie.

Summary
Prince Arthur did not intend to bring Merlin on patrol, he didn’t even know his manservant could ride a horse. But he can’t say no to that grin, not when Merlin has gone and packed and saddled up a horse for himself without asking. It’s a dull, routine patrol along the border, almost a formality at this point. Even if magic is legal in Escetir, they’ve held a shaky peace treaty with Camelot for over a decade; it’s unlikely they’ll see any danger.
But what Arthur does not know is that the recent spike in deaths of magical creatures in Camelot has not gone unnoticed. There are whispers that King Uther is a liar and a hypocrite, now secretly rebuilding his magical defence. And to bring sorcery to the border - well now, that would be an act of aggression tantamount to declaring war.

Summary
It was all too quick: an arrow jolting into Arthur’s back with a fleshy thud, Arthur crying out. Five more arrows in the air, one pointing to Arthur's heart. Merlin flung himself forward, threw his arms out, screamed his magic in a blaze of fire. The last arrows crackled into nothing. Archer after archer fell, thumping to the ground.
And Merlin had no time to shout, no time to gasp, no time to move back. Arthur was already spinning, his sword swooping up and slashing back down in one smooth movement. A perfect arc to target Merlin’s neck. The blinding white edge too large in Merlin's vision, too close. It snagged in his neckscarf, cut right through to his skin.
Time stopped.
