Dana hadn’t lifted a weight in six months. Her strength and stamina were shot, and she didn’t have the flexibility to touch her toes. Just thinking about using any of this equipment exhausted her, but it was a nice gesture.
“Thank you,” she said. “This should be helpful.”

Dana sits up so she can look at Tim better, more like two adults having a conversation and less like a stepmother talking to her kid. Tim always liked that about Dana. “I know it’s been hard these past couple of years. Losing your mom, then me showing up, and the move away from Bristol. You’re a teenager, and that alone comes with all sorts of changes and confusion. I get it. And I don’t want you to feel like you can’t talk to me about stuff.”
“Like what?”
Dana smiles gently at him, like she knows something he doesn’t. “Like anything you want.” She thumbs a smudge of pizza sauce off his cheek. “I know I’m not your mom. And I promised you I wouldn’t ever try to take her place if you didn’t want me to, but I do love you, Tim. That’s never going to change. Got it?”
