"He said it was just a stronger edible," Wyatt says. "Apparently it was supposed to be super natural, and relaxing and rejuvenating, not the weak Canadian shit, and—"

"You say a bad word, Hazy," Ilya interrupts, pointing a tiny finger at him.

    "Right." Wyatt winces. "Sorry, kid."

Rejuvenating. Shane turns the word over in his mind a few times, while readjusting Ilya’s little body in his arms.

    Jesus fucking Christ.

    Mini-Doc: Meet Ottawa’s 14 year-old hockey phenom, Shane Hollander

    -

The video has been over for long enough that his screen has gone dark, but Ilya is still stuck staring at the device.

He hasn’t let any tears spill over yet, but god, he’s going to cry.

    Summary

The thing is, David’s pretty sure the kid’s living in a car. Or a motel, or something. Things aren’t good; he’s sure of that. He’s not the most observant guy, and he’s kind of shocked Yuna and Shane seem completely oblivious. Ilya’s twelve years old and wears a sweatshirt that hugs his shoulders far too tight, jeans that ride up past his ankles. He grimaces every time he has to force his feet into his shoes, clearly also too small. He absolutely, patently refuses to be driven home, and Irina never picks him up. He says he doesn’t know his mother’s phone number when Yuna asks for it; David suspects she doesn’t have one. And Ilya completely shuts down when someone mentions joining a hockey team.

Ilya and Irina find themselves in Ottawa in 2003. Or more accurately, the Hollanders find them, and never seem to let go.

    Summary

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.

But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.

(how ilya learns about shane's food allergies) (and how shane learns what it's like to have someone who always saves him a seat at the table) (and who also makes sure there's food he can eat on the table to start with)
