Carmen thinks Sydney is the kind of angel in renaissance paintings that he grew up looking at. Paintings that he would look at and feel a sereneness wash over him. Looking at art was meditative in that way, for him. When his mother was having an intense outburst, when Mikey was yelling just as loudly back, he would focus on the photos of saints, of angels. A silent prayer that they could grant him some sort of peace. Please help me still this chaos. I constantly feel like I'm about to break. Please, I need it all to not be so much. Please.
He knows he needs to bottle this moment, meeting her. He needs to save it, and store it deep within his heart so he won't forget it. His first angel sighting. He'll treat it tenderly, it's a fragile thing he needs to protect. It seems too good to be true so he'll make sure to check on it often, make sure it's real.

It would be terrible to realize his brittle nature and invite Sydney to touch him only to crumble away and make her feel bad. He’d been eroding for a while.
So he was boned either way, and Cousin’s fine example had taught that lesson. Don’t love a woman who you’ll love forever when she feels like an angel trying to polish your shit. He needed to aim for something mundane and pragmatic. He needed a nice girl who could talk him down and convince him his blood sugar was the problem. He needed to have his whole life not become some harmonious masterpiece of a signature dish where man became bear became restaurant became woman became holy fucking writ.

This is to say that he’s sitting at the bartop, nursing an eggnog and half-listening to the convoluted story Fak is yelling into his ear, and just absolutely staring at Sydney from across the room. She’s with Sugar, watching karaoke and eating one of the ricotta and roasted grape crostinis he made earlier today (they really should’ve hired a caterer). She’s nodding, eyes wide at whatever Nat tells her and Carmy irrationally decides it must be some dig at him- it’s not a totally far-fetched notion.
Her arms are bare, a rare sight, and it feels stupidly scandalous.

She really is- she’s trying to enjoy the karaoke and the hors d'oeuvres and the story Natalie’s telling her. But Sydney can feel Carmy’s eyes on her from across the room like a sixth sense and it’s really fucking distracting. It’s becoming an issue really, the staring. Sydney can’t tell if he’s really that obvious about it or if she’s just hyper aware of everything he does (either is equally likely)- but whatever the case, she can feel his eyes like strobe lights on her back as she bites into her crostini.Series
