Summary
That was the shape of his love: quiet, unnoticed, and expendable.
But this? Mike’s grip told a different story. This was not expendable.
Will’s spent years believing he was the one who’d slip through the cracks — the one no one would notice until he was gone. But when he nearly falls apart, it’s Mike who holds on like letting go might end the world.

Summary
It may have taken Mike Wheeler a little while to figure it out, but there was no denying that he was pathetically in love with Will Byers
Emphasis on "pathetically"
When Will smiles, Mike smiles back; When Will speaks, Mike bursts into flames; When Will flexes, Mike melts into a puddle of goo
Tired of watching Mike make a mess out of himself, the rest of the Party decide to help him out
(If only they could tell if Will likes him back or not!)
~~~
Or: the Party is oblivious, Mike is even more oblivious, and Will is engaging in a little bit of petty revenge
(As in, Will knows that Mike's in love with him. He decided to see how long it'd take for Mike to realize Will loved him back)
