They had agreed the next time I had this familiar nightmare, they would try something new. I just hadn't expected it to be the next day.
I woke up shaking and hyperventilating. My skin felt clammy, and Rocky jolted where I shot up suddenly. I knew I startled him even if he wasn't asleep, and a part of me felt guilty.
The larger part was afraid. It was the familiar nightmare: grass against my cheek, barbed wire in the sky, the sharp prick of a needle in my neck. Carl's shiny shoes as I begged him for help with tears in my eyes.
