Arthur nodded thoughtfully. If Merlin didn’t want him to know something, it was probably important.
“Gaius, huh,” he mused. “I don’t know a Gaius.” But even as he said it there was something buried way down below, prickling at his memory.
In which Arthur falls asleep, falls ill, and farms, and Merlin brings him home.

Arthur had never particularly minded masquerade balls in principle, because there was a certain uncomplicated pleasure in watching a room full of powerful people pretend, for one evening, that they were not quite as important as they actually were, though he suspected he was meant to find all of it tedious rather than strangely liberating, which perhaps said more about his current state of mind than he was willing to examine too closely.
