He refused to leave Akechi here to fucking die in the bowels of his asshole father's ship. He'd give anything. He'd beg, he'd pray, he'd switch places with him, he didn't care, just please, someone—

"I have the strength you seek, voleur de coeurs, but your heart is not yet prepared to hold me."

Agony pulsed from his temples and lanced down his spine, thorns lodging between every column. Fire seared through his veins, charring into his fingertips. He choked on smoke and ash in his lungs.

Akira dropped in time with the gunshots he didn't hear over the sound of his own screaming. His knees cracked against the ground.

    He remembered this sensation.

This was so much worse than Arsene.

I say: "Watch me save him."

    Summary

Kokichi pulls the lever to the MonoMono Slot Machine for what feels like the thousandth time that day. He almost doesn't register the diagonal line of sevens flashing down his screen, indicating that he's hit the jackpot. Again.

Slots aren't nearly as fun as some of the other games in the casino, but Kokichi has his strategy down to a science; unfortunately, the most mind-numbingly boring game present is also the quickest and easiest way to earn coins without risking too much. He's been playing all morning and into the afternoon, careful to keep an ear out for any of the others. He would hide if they came near, of course—he's public enemy number one right now, so there's a high chance of someone trying to kill him—but no one bothers. The casino is, unsurprisingly, not a very popular place to go the morning after witnessing a friend get executed.

    A friend. Right.

    Summary

The voices faded in and out, but Kokichi caught enough to draw a conclusion: a hospital. So, not dead. And no longer in the game. But he had been crushed. He remembered the hydraulic press coming down, the first moment of cold, unyielding pressure, and then nothing. But he was alive. In a hospital. Which could only mean…

A laughter bubbled up through him. Even while struggling to breathe, he started cackling. So that was it, wasn’t it? The answer to all his questions. The thing he had missed. The thing that made everything he had done meaningless.

“Oma? Can you hear us?” one of the doctors asked. Kokichi abruptly stopped laughing, and finally managed to take a deep breath. Game over. Press any key to continue.

After the game, Kokichi and Kaito wake up in a world they have few to no memories of. They may not know themselves, but after what happened in the game, they know each other, and that's something to hold on to.

    Summary

He had barely been allowed to see Ouma. The Team Danganronpa staff were dead set on the idea that he was a bad influence on Kaito’s fragile mental state. (How the hell was he supposed to take that? It was an insult.)

When that didn't work they began telling him that it was also for Ouma's sake as well.

His few conversations with Ouma had actually proved that concept. The guy pretty obviously didn't want to see him. Kaito's attempts to make contact had been entirely rejected.

Kaito bit back a frustrated groan. If he was all there in his own head he knew he could get past that. Knew he could figure out the little bastard. But it felt like his brain was melting. And it had been that way since he woke up. It didn't matter though. He was being selfish now. The sleep deprivation carefully peeled away all of the parts of Kaito that were worried enough to not do this.

He knocked on Ouma's door. And wasn't surprised when the boy answered. The prepared smile quickly fell when he saw who it was.

“Kaito.” he said, voice intentionally flat. “What are you doing here?”

Kaito's heart skipped a beat at his first name. He shook it off. “Can't sleep.”
