“The color or the rock?” I tease, earning myself a low staccato noise not unlike what a human might sound like when faking a laugh.
And then, from one second to another, he straightens. I sense the shift in the air, and as I rise from my squat, Rocky's gaze follows me very, very slowly.
“What?” I ask.
“Say name of this again,” he says, and I tilt my head. He’s never needed me to repeat something before. His hearing is immaculate, and he’s never once forgotten something I’ve told him.
“It’s a rock.”
He doesn’t move. He stares at me with his featureless face until even that feels more unsettling than eye contact.
“Grace,” he says flatly. “You are fucking kidding me, question?”

Grace swallows, turning back to the computer. He's got a pretty solid idea as to what Rocky is trying to say. Even if it makes his face heat up.
"I think you mean brat, Rock," he answers, adding the new word to the program. In spite of the way he knows it's going to be used against him.
"Brat! Grace is brat brat brat. So mean to Rocky!"
Yep, there it is.
After their first romp together, Rocky and Grace have a few hard conversations and some teasing ones. Grace is in over his head.

"Get more nip-" Grace mutters to himself as he repeats Rocky's insistent request. "No!"
"But Grace say 'once today'. Imply Rocky have more tomorrow."Rocky gets curious about human biology, much to Grace's chagrin.

Hours later, Rocky wriggles awake. The pain has eased. His heartbeats have slowed. His cells are still functioning. There is no falling apart. He can hear the scritch-scratch of his five claws on Xenonite. He can hear the machines, humming their false song. He can hear the silent expanse of space. The distant stars. His friends, dead in the hull. And the building feeling, deep in every cell — every fibre of his body — that something is so incredibly wrong.
Rocky knows this disease. Exhaustion. And all alone in space, there is no cure.
It is a primal requirement that Eridians sleep only under the trusting gaze of their companions. Rocky spends forty-six years alone in space.

Something Grace barely caught sight of in that dark mixture of steel and coil that was, at that moment, Driver's eyes. There was just pure, unaltered desire. A hunger so deep, so strong, Grace forgot whatever he was going to say.
Driver took his hand suddenly. “Let's go.”
