Millie Fontenot dies alone, with no family of her own, and no one mourning her loss, at the near end of 1956.

“He is your brother,” Mother waves off cooly. “There is little to know there. Blood will bind you both, as it already does now.”
Maegelle opens her mouth, wanting to argue, but finds herself without words to say. Instead, she closes her mouth and bites down on the inside of her cheek.
“Besides,” Mother continues, heedless of her daughter’s ire, “your father and I would not condone anything untowards.”
