    “She’s going to make a full recovery,” she said warmly.

    “Thank you,” said Tom, squeezing her hands, his heart feeling like it might burst with gratitude. “If it is alright with you, Mrs Gardiner, I’ll remain here tonight. That way you can call for me if I am needed.”

    Mary’s aunt nodded fondly, perhaps understanding more than what Tom had spoken, and recognising that it would be fruitless to try to dissuade him.

    A brief guide to this haphazard series:

    Work 1: In which Mary Bennet is having none of it
    1: Tom attempts to graciously step aside. Mary gets in his way
    2: Ryder attempts to interrupt. Mary politely declines
    3: Ryder swims out toward the boat. Mary tells Tom to seize the oars and row
    4: Mary attempts to distract him with bird calls. Tom gets the conversation back on track

    Work 2: In which Mr G is having none of it…
    “Nope to Tom riding off on his horse.”

    Work 3: In which neither Tom nor Mary are allowing anything to get entirely out of hand…
    “Nope to Mary waking and Tom not being out in the corridor stressily watching over her.” Putting a firm stop to all of that heartbreaking nonsense and restoring felicity wherever I go!
