Summary
Levi passed by the cleaning and medical shelves, nearest to the entrance for ease of access, the faint smell of disinfectant something of a comfort to him. He’d likely left the ledger in the center of the tent, where a workbench and some office supplies were located, and he turned the last stacked wall and lifted his face to start scanning for it.
Jean was still here, where Levi had left him, but now so was Reiner. They were far closer than was typical, enough to make Levi’s mind white out and his feet to freeze suddenly in place. Jean was sitting on the edge of the table, Reiner right in front of him, and a quick, heavy impact hit his chest because this was violence. These two men had a complicated history that involved violence, not just because they were on opposite sides of a war but personal violence, motivated by emotion, by betrayal.
Jean was in danger.
Only, he wasn’t.

Less than a year after the Rumbling, Levi accidentally discovers Jean and Reiner's relationship. He experiences a multitude of emotions due to the absolute shock of this finding, and finds himself in a state of both concern and acceptance.

Summary
When Jean slowly glances up, Floch feels something spark in the base of his spine. He doesn’t know what it is. He likes it. If Jean was a spindle of tangled fragile thread, Floch was the thimble in control of his fluidity, he could see the frayed bits of twine and if he could just clip them off, he’d be a perfect item to display, the sort of stitching made for uniforms, to wrap around his finger.

Summary
It was another lonely night, but devastatingly quiet. Mikasa’s fingers clawed into her own arms as she walked down the hall, hating herself for how much she wanted the sound of the Rumbling back because at least then, she knew where the titans were.
Now, she didn’t.
They were somewhere else. Moving along. Marching off to maim and massacre. It was quiet out there – so quiet.
She wanted to be beside Jean again, feel him there, and it made her feel weak and stupid and lost, and Mikasa hated feeling weak and stupid and lost, but sitting on his bed last night, and feeling her dear friend be so near, not even an inch from her own skin, had been more relieving than she could have hoped.

Instead of spending one night in Shiganshina alone, such that canon suggests, both the Rumbling and Armin and Connie's journey take multiple days, leaving Jean and Mikasa without anyone except each other. This extended time leaves room for many things to grow, including unexplored feelings, implications for their country, and the volatile suspicion from dangerous Yeagerists who threaten both of their safety.

It wasn’t Jean’s body above him that made his heart race. It wasn’t the proximity of his shirtless chest that made breath feel so shallow in his own throat. It certainly wasn’t because they were doing this at all, as they’d been doing this for quite some time now, and fucking each other was an activity they’d both come to have marked enthusiasm for.
No. They were no longer mapping each other’s bodies like new territory, or finding the sensitive spots neither of them were aware of, or even sneaking around like they had done once. Oh, no. That wasn’t why Eren was newly anxious.
It wasn’t any of that.
It was something completely, entirely new, unfamiliar, and nerve-wracking enough to make Eren feel almost dizzy, and the anticipation of it was possibly going to kill him.
