When the robotic voice responded, he made it repeat its reply three times, hoping to hear a different result. It never changed.
This ship was the Hail Mary, carrying a crew of three. They were 11.9 light-years from Earth and fast approaching Tau Ceti.
He wasn’t even in the Solar System. He was in fucking space for who knew what reason, approaching an entirely uncharted system, and one of three of the people onboard with him was dead while the other was still asleep.There was not enough fuel to go back.
This was a one-way trip.
A suicide mission.or the AU where Simon is from Earth, gets thrown into space right alongside Grace, and has the misfortune of waking up a little too early into the mission.

Summary
Gracie was perfectly fine and happy with his life in Erid. He really was.
Simon just wanted to live. What would he be willing to do to get it? Simon meets a strange, unusually clean man who tells him he's safe with him. It has to be some kind of trick, a twisted game he doesn't yet understand. But he's willing to play to get what he wants.
Grace could communicate better; it would save them a lot of trouble. -

Angels have blond hair. He never knew that. Or that they had hair at all. Maybe they don't—
— are the first thoughts that come to him when he was able to have thoughts again.
The creature above him is bathed in light, blinding and brilliant. The light smears the outline of its head into a pale golden blur.
The angel is speaking to him, he thinks. The thought is so absurd, Simon can only lay there and stare. He's vaguely aware of other noises around him - footsteps, the shuffling of a busy room and strange discordant melodies that sound like wind chimes shaking in the wind, overlain with a strangely human voice. Must be the angel.
The angel shifts above him and Simon notices a splotch of red close to it's head.
He frowns, tries to lift a hand and when that fails, he tries to speak. He has to warn the angel that there's blood on its halo. Simon hasn't believed in anything in a long time but in his delirium, can't resist the burning urge to correct this wrong. Angels shouldn't have blood on them, especially if it came from him.

Summary
The arrival at Erid is a momentous occasion. Rocky is excited and thrilled. Ryland is overwhelmed. But the reunion is happy, beautiful, amazing.
Or that's what it should have been. Except Rocky gets hurt, Ryland is left to try and communicate with an alien planet, and everyone is scrambling to figure out how to do this. To Grace, this is incredible but also bittersweet - he got Rocky home safely with the taumoeba, now he just gets... to starve. To Erid, this is insane - how did Rocky show up in an alien spaceship with a child???

Ryland Grace is stuck trying to speak Eridian, immediately makes himself sound like a child, and Rocky's world and family scramble to help this strange pebble. Misunderstandings galore, alongside hurt/comfort and angst and fluff.
