Summary
Well, there was nothing for it. “I intend to take back Rosaria from Sanbreque.”
“Take back Rosaria,” Mother scoffed. “How childish. We must only ask and Rosaria will be returned to us.”
“Ask?” Joshua echoed. “Ask who, Sylvestre? Sanbreque? Ask them the way you asked for the death of my father, ten years ago?”
Mother’s expression closed off. She shifted her grip on the child in her arms and turned sharply. There was no maid nearby; the only person available to take Olivier from her was Clive. Joshua expected her to pick one son over the other—Joshua couldn’t remember a time when she had ever trusted Clive with something she considered precious.
To the shock of everyone, but none so much as Clive himself, Mother dumped her squirming two year old into Clive’s arms so she could continue to argue with Joshua.
“Everything I did, I did for you! I had your father killed to secure our place in an empire threatening to swallow us! Do you think that betrayal was nothing? Do you think I sacrificed nothing to keep you safe?”

“Morning,” Cloud finally croaked.
“There you are,” Barret said. Cloud turned to see a big grin on his face, unguarded—it was strange to think, that loud, earnest Barret held anything back. But there was a difference between how he acted in their bedroom and outside of it, and Cloud managed to lift a corner of his lips at the sight of him. “I was wondering when you’d wake up. I’d’ve shaken you, but you know how you get in the mornings.”
Cloud nodded. He was known to be a little more stabby than usual before he remembered he wasn’t actively on the run anymore.
“Gonna shower,” he announced.
“Okay.” Tifa sat up, hair spilling over her shoulders and pooling around her thighs. She took a second too long when she blinked, wavering a little. “I can cook breakfast if—”
“It’s my turn,” Cloud grumbled. He trudged to the closet, grabbed a t-shirt, a random pair of pants, and underwear. “Stop taking my jobs.”
“Or cough up two thousand gil about it,” Barret joked, getting a grin from Cloud and Tifa both.

“What do you have waitin’ for you in Breeg?” Smoke curled out of Mr. Morgan’s red mouth. He waited at Clayton’s side. His tail swung low and slow behind him, like the pendulum of an out-of-time clock.
“Nothing at all,” Clayton lied.
“Then let me prove it,” Mr. Morgan said, sinking down to his knees in front of Clayton, in full view of the stupid swinging saloon doors Clayton had added to the room somewhat as a joke. “If that nothin’ at home in Breeg won’t protest. Off the books, Azran. You ain’t payin’ me for this.”

“I told you to stay with me, Mylo,” Jace pushed past Varus. Jace grabbed Mylo by his skinny shoulders—not so skinny now as they had been that first fateful day in their dorm, but skinny all the same. “What the hell were you thinking, running to the back like that? We were on a mission, I gave you an order!”
Around the four of them, workers bustled around their mechs. Renn could see the fleet of engineers crossing the hanger floor towards the steaming mechs, already prepared to crack them open and repair the damage that had been done. Renn caught Jace’s shoulder but didn’t dare yank him back, not in clear view of the crowd.
“Calm yourself,” he murmured, “we are not alone here, Jace. Unless you wish to punish Mylo publicly—”
“What the fuck?” Jace’s burning anger refocused on Renn.
“—this will have to be a private conversation. Preferably in our own rooms.”

“And you, Shepherd?” Professor Azran said hopefully, turning to face Shepherd. He offered up a box filled with dark, oblong shapes—it took a moment for Shepherd’s exhausted mind to recognize them for what they were. “It is quite a rare purchase, these cigars, very hard to find.”
“Oh, no, Professor, I’m alright,” Shepherd said, waving a hand in front of himself. And then, because it had been a long few weeks of wandering and they had another few long weeks of wandering ahead of them, and because the effort of being on-shift for weeks at a time was beginning to wear on him, he said, “the doc’s a smokin’ man, but not me. Uh, thank you, though.”
Miss Victoria and the Professor both frowned, but it was Kana who spoke next. She gestured to the lit cigar hanging from the Professor’s lip. “The doctor who raised you. The smell must be nostalgic, then, especially when we are so far from home.”

“I heard noises,” Kana said. Her voice was as it ever was—soft and serious. Shepherd listened to her footsteps as she crossed the floor towards them. He hunched in on himself. With his eyes closed he was overaware of the sweat on his heaving, bare chest, the tickle of blood down his abs, the screaming ache of his new burn scar. “And when I reached the stairs I could smell burning flesh. What are you doing?”
“I am giving Shepherd what he wants,” Sarnax said openly. Shepherd didn’t know why he had expected any tact from him.
“And that is?”
“He wants to be punished for what happened today,” Sarnax told her, “and he wants to be reassured of Gherix’s continued patronage of this journey. I am in a place to give him both, but I think it would mean just as much from you—that is, of course, you wish to join us.”
“Are you enjoying this?” Kana asked quietly.
There was no judgment in her tone but he could hear it in his own head. How horrible he was. How much of a fucking monster he was, to enjoy something like this.
“He is.”
“I want to hear it from you, Shepherd. Do you enjoy this?”

“You think I’m just gonna stand around while Wren’s missin’?” Gideon spluttered, indignant. “I’m gonna help you look!”
“In the fuckin' dark?” Silas said, but Gideon knew from his tone that it wasn’t really a question.
“Look, you ain’t know Wren like I know ‘er,” Gideon said, “so what if you do find ‘er? You think you’re gonna be able to make ‘er come back to camp? Lemme come with you, Silas, I can help.”
“No,” Silas said. When he focused back on Gideon, his decision was clear in his face. Gideon’s worrywart older brother, always so taken up with putting himself between Gideon and the world.
“Look, a little nighttime walk ain’t gonna hurt,” Gideon tried.
“And that’s the kind of fuckin’ attitude that’ll kill you,” Silas interrupted, voice going hard and rough like it always did when he was ordering Gideon around. “You stay here—both of you stay right the fuck here. I’m goin’ to find Wren, then we’ll all walk back together, alright? It’s too dangerous for us to be out here right now.”

Link flinched back from whatever look Paya gave him, but reached forward again to cup her cheeks and smooth away her tears. Zelda settled to the floor next to them, on her knees in the dirt, and ever so carefully rested a hand on Paya’s shoulder.
“You’ve never seen me use my power like that, huh?” Zelda said, sounding vaguely self conscious. Paya looked at her, uncomprehending. “It’s a little intense, isn’t it?”
“Allergic,” Link said nonsensically, but Zelda nodded.
“Maybe,” she said, “what do you need, Paya? Water? A hug? Some space?”
Paya just looked at her. The Goddess made Hylian. The Goddess incarnate. The Goddess herself, bursting out of Zelda’s skin. Moved her eyes to Her chosen knight, Her hero. The cold steel of his eyes was gone, replaced by the gentle blue she had always known from him.
What was that?
⚔️👑⚔️
With the return of Zelda to Hyrule, Paya is tasked by her grandmother to remain by her side as she travels the remains of her Queendom. Which, between a budding relationship with Link and the strange movements of the Yiga, poses a much bigger challenge than expected.
Will she be able to keep Zelda safe? Or will Hyrule prove too dangerous for her?

“You’re up early,” Nero said, glancing out the window. The sun had long since risen, but Kyrie had been excused from school thanks to her new work as a fancy singer for the Order. She studied on her own, these days. At home? Nero was suddenly very aware of the fact that he had no idea what she did with her life.
“You’re just late,” Kyrie said with a little shake of her head. She seemed to realize she was holding the apple and carried it over to the sink to rinse it. “Skipping work?”
“Considering it.” Nero watched her thin fingers sweep over the apple. Were her wrists thinner than usual? Impulsively, he said, “put the apple back. I made you breakfast.”

“I don’t want you here,” Nero’s grandmother said. She ran a shaking hand through her hair and avoided Nero’s eyes.
Kyrie’s hand clenched around Nero’s. He knew without looking at her that her smile had taken on that pinched edge it always got when she couldn’t afford to be mad.
That was the thought that made his words come out steady. “I understand.”
His grandmother looked up at him and quickly glanced away again. Had she expected him to yell or fight her? He’d tried to tidy up before they left that morning, make himself look presentable.
This was almost worst than meeting Vergil for the first time. At least with Vergil, there had been other underlying issues. There was no excuse for Mrs. D’Angelo. She didn’t want to know him. It hurt—fucking hell, it hurt worse than he expected it to. But Nero could take it.
“I just want to know what happened to my mother,” Nero said.

“They do breaks now?” A plume of smoke went up from Pyke’s mouth. He turned on the too-big couch, which Rett had dragged into his workshop years ago specifically so that Pyke could luxuriate on it while Rett did all the hard work. Pyke preferred his own company, but he often found excuses to exist somewhere on Rett’s periphery. Rett had even installed a sunlamp for him, on a stand craning over the back of the couch because Pyke liked to spread out as far as he could go—Pyke had it on now, eyes half lidded as it warmed his bones. “That’s news to me.”
“Well, our last job together put me pretty high in the ranks,” Ophelia cautiously tapped at the screen with the scaled pad of one finger, “so I can afford to take breaks now.”
“So you’re playing hooky.” Rett could hear the grin in Pyke’s voice.
Ophelia glared at him. “I’m not playing hooky, Pyke.”
“That’s all well and good,” Rett interrupted, “but why are you two having this conversation in my workshop?”

“Needed something?” Dante asked.
“Just looking in,” Lady said. “You haven’t called me up since the Savior Incident—thought I’d swing by, see what you were trying to hide.”
“Just drinking,” Dante said, even though Lady had kinda figured that was what he was doing. It was the wrong time of year for it, though. All Dante’s worst anniversaries were sort of clumped together.
Lady looked around at the bottles. She nudged one with her finger, watched as it toppled over on the wooden floor. Dante didn’t seem drunk still, which meant that despite the number of bottles surrounding them, they hadn’t had a high enough alcohol content to keep him drunk through his little nap. Usually a good sign.
“I can’t let all these bottles go to waste,” Dante said after another moment.

“Are you sure you do not remember any?” Sarnax asked, leaning closer, light swinging in Shepherd’s face.
Shepherd nudged the lantern away. Sarnax’s head tilted, but he lowered it again, replacing it on the ground between them. Shepherd knew if anyone else had dared touch it, Sarnax wouldn’t have been so polite. He’d seen the Drakona near break the wrist of the last man to touch his lantern.
“There was one,” Shepherd admitted, “ain’t his poem though—said he learned it from a ol’ cowgirl out in the dust. Can’t remember most of it, but there’s a few lines. . . I was telling of my troubles, some bad mistakes I’d made, that my dreams of being a top cowgirl were startin’ to fade. The cowboy looked at me and said with a sort of smile, ‘A sorry hand is in the way all the time, a good one just once in a while.”

Summary
Some part of him, buried deep in the ash of his body where the sun could never touch, had chafed with the idea of his father, a pride too hard-won to submit to that old, golden image Rett had painted of the man. Shepherd’s father, a rough man, a hard man, but one who put food on the table, who never raised hand nor voice against Shepard, who existed in the patches of Shepherd’s childhood memories—and Shepherd, too proud to follow in his father’s footsteps, too desperate to be different.
Where had that gotten him? In hell, with all the others who shared his skin and horns, instead of the soil of the Deep Mother’s embrace. Abe Solomon should be around here, somewhere, ready with a million jokes to lay claim to Shepherd’s lonely soul. Grinning Jack Booth was supposed to be here, too, somewhere, no doubt waiting patiently for his revenge against Shepherd.
James Morgan, too. Shepherd looks down at his hands. Brimstone Jim was supposed to be here somewhere.
“Fuck that,” Shepherd mutters as he stands.

Summary
Vergil stared down at his book, but he wasn’t reading the words. On any other night, he would have already devoured the book and the information within.
Tonight, Vergil sat in an armchair in Nero’s house. It was so saturated with Nero’s power that Vergil almost wanted to tear the thing apart. It was only the knowledge of Fortuna’s precarious economic situation that kept Vergil from it, even as Nero’s children screamed and played with their granduncle Dante, filling the air with their shrill screams and Dante’s rich laughter. If Vergil was human—if he was still V—he might have gotten a migraine from all the noise.
Even the adults in the room were being loud. The women had all gathered on the other side of the living room, talking about something or other. The last Vergil had heard, they were discussing the best ways to kill a demon with no prep time.
The only quiet person in the house, aside from Vergil, was Nero. He sat at the coffee table by Vergil’s feet, his gun disassembled on the table in front of him. Vergil had been trying not to pay too much attention to him. He wasn’t sure what to say.

Nero blinked down at the top of Kyrie's head. He didn’t know what he had expected from her; she was his oldest friend, the only one to stand by him when he was angry and disruptive. Even his friends in the Order had distanced themselves after a while, too wary to be seen near a loose canon like Nero.
“Demons killed your parents.” Nero’s voice sounded small even to himself. Kyrie straightened off his shoulder with a heavy sigh, like the small movement took more effort than it actually did. Kyrie met Nero’s eyes, lips pursed. “They ruined your life.”
“They did,” Kyrie allowed, “they have nearly cost me everything.”
“Then how can you say we?” Nero looked down at his devil bringer, the glowing claws, the vibrant scales. He clenched it into a tight fist. “I am. . .”

“At least you’re acting like you normally do,” Sciel said, “I was going to go to Gustave about it, because he’s a lot better about these things than you are, but he’s weird too.”
“You’ve noticed?” Lune asked, straightening up in her chair. Her research promptly slipped from her mind as she focused on this new problem.
“He’s not experimenting anymore,” Sciel said, “and he’s not inviting me out to talk my ear off about whatever his apprentices are doing. Even back when he was dating Sophie for the first time, it was always gears this and chroma that. Well, not anymore, apparently. It’s like the drive’s all seeped out of him.”
“Yeah, he’s never here anymore,” Lune said, tilting her chin towards Gustave’s empty chair. “I’ve still got my research, but he’s. . . he’s been gone. Has he really been spending that much time with Sophie? I heard they were back together, but. . .”
“Not with Sophie,” Sciel said, “Maelle.”

“I’m growing into my mother’s face,” Lune continued, reaching up with those slender fingers to touch the pictos on her cheek. “I hadn’t realized that I looked so much like her. I’d always thought I’d take more after my father; I’ve always been more like him, personality-wise. But looks—if I had another ten years, maybe, then. . . Sorry, you were—you wanted to relax?”
“I want you to relax,” Sciel said, taking the out gratefully, “though this is starting off suspiciously like it did when we were seventeen.”
Lune’s laugh seemed to startle even her. Sciel soaked up the sound, let it wash away her foul mood. “Do you want it to happen like it did when we were seventeen? I seem to remember how off-balance we both were.”
“I could think of a few better ways to handle you,” Sciel offered, resting a hand on Lune’s thigh, “if you let me.”

“You fell into mako?” Tifa asked. That was new. That was different from last time.
“The doctor said I’m lucky not to be poisoned,” Cloud told her. He pointed at his face with the hand that wasn’t holding Tifa up. “It messed up my eyes, though.”
His eyes were blue, with a few swirls of Lightstream green. The same as they had been after Hojo’s experiments. Tifa leaned in to stare at them, ignoring Cloud’s cheeks turning a splotchy red. Yes, they were exactly the same. The Planet had returned his enhancements to him, hopefully without the side effect that was Sephiroth’s repeated attempts to regain a foothold in -
Sephiroth. Sephiroth was alive.
“What was the dream about?” Cloud asked.
“We went to Midgar,” Tifa said quietly, unable to not tell him, “and we met a flower girl. And when she died, the world ended.” She turned her head away from him, the horrible, possessive words squeezing out of her lips where Aerith finally couldn’t hear them. “She was ours. Tifa looked up and found Cloud’s eyes closed. He held her hand between both of his own, cradled close to his lips like it was a holy object. His breath ghosted over the drying blood on her skin. The zombies shuffled after them. She couldn’t see Mom anymore.
“Please, Aerith,” Cloud prayed over and over in a terrified loop. “Save Tifa, please Aerith, we’re not going to make it.”
Beside them, a handful of green particles swirled into existence. The zombies were closer now—Tifa had been bitten, she recognized distantly. The injury was bad; the change would be quick. Then she would be with her mother again and everything would be fine.
The world lit green as the particles collided. Tifa flinched back, eye squinting almost shut. When her vision adjusted, she stared up in wonder.
A woman floated above them. She wore a pink dress and had long, wavy hair that floated around her. She stood between the two of them and the horde. With a graceful motion, she made the zombies simply disappear.
