Robby’s silence told Jack everything he needed to know.
It all made sense now. The boy’s twitchy, erratic behavior. His over-eager, people pleasing personality. The way he sometimes didn’t understand basic references, as if he’d been sheltered from the world his whole life. Dennis Whitaker was a smart kid. He hadn’t been indoctrinated into a cult. He’d simply never known anything else.

Where innocence once existed — a child of chastity and virtue — only flames remained, these yellowish, smoldering sparks that now keep him burning until the waves of death can become of him.

Summary
Dennis wasn't a self-pitying person. Not at all. In fact, he tried his damnedest to see himself the way God saw him, with little to no care whatsoever. So no, these were purely logical questions. Dennis didn't deserve to be here; he was merely place-holding. So, in what sense would it be right for him to steal food from a hospital?
But he was so, so hungry. It was becoming difficult not to indulge himself for once, and Dennis was having trouble rationalizing why he should be allowed food.
Yes, his only purpose in life was to heal people who were meant to be here, but it wasn't like he was that good at it. There were others much more capable. Then again, there was no way he would be able to work with the hunger he was currently feeling. Five days with absolutely no sustenance created wicked ideology. He just hoped God could forgive him... If he were even watching.
Dennis already knew he was evil, so this line of thinking would just have to work.

It’s the late afternoon, two hours before he’d normally be set loose. He has freedom, due to a debilitating migraine he realized wasn’t going to slide under Bobby’s regime. He could do whatever he wanted now. Like buying a sandwich.
Shit. That’s unbelievably lame.
A message comes up. It’s Robby.
'Hey, kid. Checking if your patient in North 4 was supposed to know about her sister’s diagnosis yet. Are we waiting for Kiara?"
Whitaker sees the line begin to move across the street, so he follows at a slower pace so he can type out a reply. "Yes, please. And check her sister’s abdomen rigidity–"
Before he presses send, the beeping of the crosswalk sign stops. He’s halfway across the street, and looks up from his phone, at the brilliant white lights of a car barreling straight for him.Sometimes a man and a deer have something in common.

Signal after signal rings through and she's about to give up when he finally accepts the call.
There's a weird shuffling noise in her ear.
“Huckleberry, where the hell are you?” she says
For a few seconds there's only silence and her stomach twists unpleasantly. She presses her hand to her other ear to try to cancel out the noise around her.
“Trinity…I don't feel good…help…”
Her grip around the phone tightens and she looks at Dana and Robby and her heart picks up speed.
His voice is hoarse and weak and he seems out of it.
“Where are you? What's going on?” she asks.
“Really…tired…something's…wrong…”
He coughs into the phone for several long seconds.
“Trin’ty?...pl’se help…”
The words are slurry and he struggles to get the words out, his breaths rapid in her ear.
“Where are you? Talk to me! Huckleberry? Tell me where you are.” she says frantically.
There's nothing but silence in her ear.

“Him? You’re not serious. He’ll deck me!” Mike protests.
“Hey, you’re the one that said this was the best way to get views, you can’t go blaming me for this,” Trevor says, defensively, mouth still full and screwing up his face in disgust as he looks down at his hotdog. “This wasn’t worth it.”
Mike glances at him briefly before turning back to look at the well-dressed... businessman? Banker? Lawyer? The styled hair definitely says lawyer, “I did try to tell you. And, for the record, I was high when I suggested this. I can’t be held accountable for this anymore than you can.”

Which meant Trinity and Dennis had been away from the hospital for all of forty-five minutes before being rushed back in on stretchers.
“I told you, I’m fine,” she scowled as Dana guided the EMTs toward Central 6. “You’re not even supposed to be here!”
Or: Trinity and Dennis are just trying to make it home, a poorly timed bus accident sends them right back to the Pitt. Luckily they have people (and morphine) to help with their predicament.
