Zandik and Feofan were two rather interesting individuals. They were both students at the Akademiya, just under different departments.
Other scholars would probably call them "weird" and avoid them while others might not even know who they are. But they both could not care less about their colleagues' opinions, they were actually glad people avoided them. So I guess this shared perspective they had for the world was one of the things that binded them together.

Summary
Dottore and Pantalone are in an arranged relationship. Neither one knows the other too closely except for rumors and reputation. Pantalone is convinced Dottore is a socially awkward recluse only interested in ruin guards and gadgets...and he isn't entirely wrong. Funding him for 'sexual favors' in return the two are completely enamored with each other. Or, at least, that's the story Baizhu read. Now that he's trapped inside Pantalone's body... he doesn't know what to think!

Some post-canon fix it Dottolone
Following the Irminsul incident, though everyone believes him dead, Dottore is very much alive.
Granted, he faces a slight problem: specifically, the fact that he is trapped in the body of an eight-inch lizard.He needs to find a way back to Snezhnaya and his human body, something Pantalone could easily help him with - had he actually bothered to let him in on this plan, too. As it stands, however, he is forced against his will to play the part of an innocent little reptile, all while slowly realizing that his colleague might have held him in much higher regard all along than he ever could have imagined.
