“You were gone,” Kris’ eyes were glassy. Glossy. They finally landed on him. “How’d you come back?”
“I was sick,” Berdly croaked, his throat as harsh as sandpaper again; it felt like he’d been heaving in stinging winter air for hours on end. “That’s all it was. An unfortunate bout of illness that I recovered from. I didn’t go anywhere, Kris.”
“You were frozen,” they repeated, voice winding tighter with urgency. The word sat wrong in the air. “Don’t you remember?”

He tugged his backpack into his lap, pretending to fiddle with the zippers as he elaborated, “Tomorrow at school is some sort of holiday: Agott told me that you’re supposed to give chocolates to people you like, but then she also said the chocolates don’t really count unless you make them yourself.”
Dagda continued staring at him for another few tense seconds, then, finally, he asked with a forming crooked grin, “Do you have a crush on someone?”
"'Like' in general!" Custas scowled. "Not just like that! Gross!"
