“Rumi! Calm down!” Mira swallowed hard. She tried to be as gentle as she could while applying pressure to her back. She couldn’t even imagine how much it hurt. “We’re right here! Just try to breathe!”
“We’re not going to leave your side!” The tears in Zoey’s eyes started to trail down her cheeks. She pressed her hand with a new towel up against her friend’s thigh first. “We’re right here! Just-” She cut herself off as she went to place her hand on Rumi’s arm. She froze with her facial expressions falling.
Tears started to cascade down Rumi’s face as she watched Zoey’s eyes widen, her pupils dilate and her whole body pull back just slightly.
The rapper’s gaze had fallen onto her exposed demon patterns.
Rumi let out a long trembling breath followed by a harsh whine.
She had to cover them up.

Jinu's soul has long since lost its humanity. There is no kindness nor empathy that remains. Instead, there is hatred fueled by shame that he directs towards this generation of Hunters. So when he learns one of these Hunters is half demon, that raging hatred explodes. Exposed in the bathhouse, Rumi doesn't have a choice whether or not her friends get to see the patterns she hides.

And suddenly, the pieces aligned.
The growing distance from the other girls. The long sleeves and heavy layers she wore even in the suffocating Seoul heat. The insistence on separate dressing rooms. The gentle, almost ashamed refusals whenever the bathhouse was mentioned.
Mira’s heart sank as the final piece fell into place, her mind replaying the lyrics Rumi had been singing not even a mere ten minutes ago:
“When your patterns start to show, I see a pain that lies below…”
She wasn’t singing about the demon marks the Saja Boys bore. She was singing about patterns she had carved into herself.

What if in Mira’s confrontation, she pushes just a little harder and learns that the meaning behind the lyrics ran far deeper than she ever expected? A canon divergent fic where Rumi’s patterns are revealed, but not at all the demon kind.

Summary
It was all Mira's fault really.
She really should have known that Rumi hadn't been paying attention when she'd said yes to studio time on their day off.
And yeah, yeah Rumi could just be a big girl and say she actually doesn't want to go to the studio, that she'd wanted to spend their first day off in ages in bed together. Preferably naked.
But Rumi is a professional, and anyway, where's the fun in that?
Rumi drives Mira insane by spending the entire morning saying her new favourite word until Mira decides she really has to do something about that.

Something in her fingers clung to the ease of hiding next to these two women. Something wanted to howl but was so deeply buried all it could do was bite at its own flesh. Frustration was clawing at the back of the empty hollow feeling. Normally couch time helped. Normally the laughter started to fill her up again. It gave Rumi something to hold onto until she wasn’t drowning.

Rumi closed the bedroom door, locking it behind her. She sighed as she leaned back against the wood, doorknob digging into her back. She took in a deep breath, an ache in her chest as she thought about Zoey's concerned face. She wasn't actively trying to avoid her girlfriends. Really, she wasn't! She was officially past all the secrecy and hiding after what happened at the idol awards. While they had all gotten much better at communicating with one another, six months was admittedly not enough time to completely undo a lifetime of repression. But, Rumi was done with keeping things to herself.
Well, except for the whole acting like a child thing. But, now that she thinks about it, Mira and Zoey could kind of see that for themselves couldn't they? Their adult girlfriend, long time band mate, and fellow demon hunter, also notably a half-demon, acting like a toddler.

Al-Hashimi had not meant to ask if she was fine.; Trinity Santos has had an utterly exhausting, grueling day. Langdon's return, combined with all other factors, is just entirely overwhelming for a woman who feels very miserably and viscerally unseen and unwanted. She now sits in the bathroom with her pants around her ankles and her underwear still on, a sharp thing in her hand, and once she's done the woman who finds her is her worst-case scenario. Baran is not as horrible as she thinks she might be.
