    Summary

As he stared at the sleeping figure in front of him whose breathing was so shallow he wasn't sure if it was real, Shane couldn’t help but hear alarm bells in the back of his head. Something was wrong. But he couldn’t figure out what.

The room felt colder. Quieter. Emptier. And everything in Shane’s head screamed wrong wrong wrong.

His eyes moved around the room, trying to find the danger he knew in his soul that was lurking. He found none, until he finally looked at the nightstand next to Ilya and noted a plastic yellow bottle he had seen before. A bottle with a white label. A bottle leftover from Ilya’s broken arm that he never touched. A bottle that was laying on its side, previously full and now empty. Next to it an empty glass bottle of vodka, a piece of paper, and a pen.

The feeling inside of him snapped, and Shane finally had a name for the feeling he had been carrying for the last several days. Now with the cold dread of realization that he listened to it too late.

    Summary

“You are worrying too much,” Ilya said.

“Easy for you to say,” Shane muttered, unable to hold it back. “Your mom hasn’t been texting all week with stressful details about this damn camp.”

“No,” Ilya said. “She has not.”

Another vibration from his phone, 'Mom' appearing on the screen, and then—Your mom hasn’t been texting all week.

“Ilya,” Shane breathed. He pushed his laptop away and stood from the chair, approaching Ilya cautiously. “Ilya, I shouldn’t have said that.”

    Or,

A reparative rewrite of the canon scene in The Long Game, in which Ilya and Shane navigate a hard conversation because grief sometimes feels like a trap door they can’t help but fall into. They lean on each other to get through. Title borrowed from Bronwen Wallace’s beautiful and devastating poem, "What It Comes to Mean”

    Summary

The thing is, David’s pretty sure the kid’s living in a car. Or a motel, or something. Things aren’t good; he’s sure of that. He’s not the most observant guy, and he’s kind of shocked Yuna and Shane seem completely oblivious. Ilya’s twelve years old and wears a sweatshirt that hugs his shoulders far too tight, jeans that ride up past his ankles. He grimaces every time he has to force his feet into his shoes, clearly also too small. He absolutely, patently refuses to be driven home, and Irina never picks him up. He says he doesn’t know his mother’s phone number when Yuna asks for it; David suspects she doesn’t have one. And Ilya completely shuts down when someone mentions joining a hockey team.

Ilya and Irina find themselves in Ottawa in 2003. Or more accurately, the Hollanders find them, and never seem to let go.

    Summary

    Shane Hollander has a problem.

Now that he and Ilya are out and married, he's noticed more and more the difference in reactions. For him, it's always the same, "why Ilya?" "were there no nice guys in Montreal?" "Did it have to be Ilya Rozanov?".

With Ilya's family and friends it's different. It's always "it just makes sense."

It makes Shane wonder, why can't his friends and family see what he sees in Ilya? Especially when others see it just as well as he does.
