“An apology?!” Now, Stevonnie’s voice is nothing but wakefulness. They sit up. “For what?!”

Pearl’s face falls into a sheepish grin as she’s roused from her thoughts. “I suppose I used to try harder to hide my feelings.”
“You could just ask.”
“And validate the Homeworld propaganda that Pearls are indistinguishable from each other?” She smiles in a peace offering of levity.
But the other Gem’s expression remains steely, and when she responds, her voice is deadpan. “Yes, that would run contrary to your whole mythos, wouldn’t it?”
“My mythos?”
“Oh, yes. The Renegade Pearl. You’re a mythic figure. Surely you know that.” There’s no compliment in the Gem’s voice.
When a group of Pearls arrives on the newly independent Planet of Earth, Pearl is forced to reckon with the stories others have told about her.
