Summary
Jimmy wants nothing more than to merely live out his life on his beloved ranch, but nothing stays the same forever. Rising expectations for him to fill the gap left after the retirement of Tumble Towns Sheriff lay heavy on his shoulders. and to add to the growing fire, an unexpected drought ravages the land. Leaving behind nothing but dried field and livestock without food. A long trip in a desperate attempt to save his ranch drops him in the middle of something he can't even begin to untangle.
An outlaw with a burning fire in his eyes, and problems with solutions that don't quite add up. All leading to something that not even the badge weighing heavy on his heart can protect him from.
Amongst all the confusion and fear he begins to question what it really is that lays closest to his heart. Can he keep this new found flame lit, or will it sizzle out leaving only darkness behind.

Qifrey had noticed Olruggio’s voice changing over the last several months, losing its scratchy boyish quality and deepening, but feeling it rumble against his chest and stomach was simply Bad News. He realized his eyebrows and eye were scrunched tight enough that he would give himself a headache, and he forced his eye open. Past the mop of Olly’s hair were Alaira’s grey eyes, alight with mischief and peering down at him. She could clearly read every thought in his head right now and smirked at his peril. At least she was here to sour the mood. He might just survive this!

The last shot is accompanied by the trail of a cry, shrill, angry, fearful. Arthur lowers his revolver. Blinks. Tongues at a bloody tooth from getting hit while strangling an O’Driscoll, spits red mucus onto one of the bodies on the floor.
The crying starts up again, as if sensing Arthur’s confusion. For a moment, Arthur thinks it must be some poor lady these savages have taken alongside the house, but quickly knows it to be untrue. It’s too—wet, pointless in a way only the young can manage, knowing that something is wrong but not knowing what. Just a shout, not the bellowing anguish of someone who knows what god-awful situation they have been put in.
“Christ,” he says, once, twice. “Christ.”

Summary
In his early days as a slave, Aventurine was subjected to neuro-reprogramming that, when activated, makes him mindlessly obedient. Thankfully, the program was scrapped, and it’s been over a decade since he’s even seen someone who knows the key phrase – but Aventurine’s luck runs out while he’s crashing Ratio’s vacation.
