    Bookmarker's Notes

    Being Shadow’s friend is weird.

He disappears for weeks, sometimes seems to forget how to speak, has to be explained literally everything that wasn’t in the 70s and is occasionally a bit too brutally honest.

Sonic decides he likes it anyway.

“Look! Look!” he beams. They decided to go to the newest amusement park to bond.

Well, he decided to go, and dragged Shadow with him.

He grumbles in response. Killjoy .

He points to the roller coaster a few dozen feet away. “Let’s go there!”

    Shadow shakes his head. “No,”

    He pouts, “But, whyyyy ?”

    “Because I don’t want to,”

“You’re so boring, I shouldn’t have brought you,”

    “Then you shouldn’t have,”

He intended it as a joke, but Shadow took it personally? “I, I was joking,”

    “Oh,” he blinks, “I’m sorry,”

“ I ’m sorry. You know, I want to be with you,” He realizes how it sounds and his face flushes. “Er, I meant, hang out with you,”

He frowns. “Was there another meaning?”

Luckily for Sonic, his confusion seems real enough. “Nope! Just two friends, hanging out, no other feelings involved. Only a deep friendship,”

    Neat .

    “You wish,”

    Not really.

Anyways. “ C’mooon , let’s go to the roller coaster! Please please pleaaaase! ”

    He sighs, “Okay,”

“Yayyy!” He hugs him, “You’re gonna have so much fun, I swear!”

Shadow goes still. Oh, fuck . No unprompted physical contact.

He pulls out, “Hey, man, I’m sorry, I forgot. I… I am so, so sorry. Like, I’d understand if you want to go and never come back. Or never talk to me again, I’d understand it, like—”

He puts his hand on Sonic’s shoulder and shakes his head.

    “Are we okay?”

    He nods.

    Forgets how to speak.

“Great! Uhm, you still wanna go to the roller coaster? Like, maybe I pushed you to accept. Do you really wanna go?”

    He shakes his head.

Did Shadow only say yes to please him? He feels so horribly bad.

He has to hold out the impulse of apologizing ( and probably rambling ) to him, because that is not what he needs right now.

    He needs a friend.

And Sonic would be anything he needs.

“Are you hungry?” A nod. “Dad gave me some money. Wait, I could swear I left it…” He takes off his shoe, “AHA! Here it is!”

He holds the crumpled bills for Shadow to see. His nose scrunches up. Oops, maybe it was not the best idea to put it there. But it’s not his fault he doesn’t have any other place to put it!

    “Let’s go to eat.”

The person at the stand is really nice. He wishes he had extra money to give them, but Tom gave him just what he needed, no more. He apologizes, nonetheless, because they didn’t freak out when they saw he and Shadow were alien hedgehogs.

It’s kinda sad, he knows, that this is his standard, but what can he do? He was chasen from the very moment he laid his beautiful and totally not stinky— fuck you, Knuckles ,— feet on this planet.

“ Soooo ,” Sonic starts. They have been eating in complete silence for what seems like years. Or a few minutes. Potayto, potahto. “I wanted to apologize.”

Shadow tilts his head. What for? He seems to say.

“Well, I was not a really good friend a while back. I completely forgot that you were rather, er,” NOT NOW. NOT THE TIME FOR JOKES. SONIC, DON’T YOU DARE— , “touchy,” he giggles. “about contact. Uhm, sorry about that stupid joke,”

His face remains as unreadable as always. He fucked up, right? He totally fucked up. He buries his face in his hands. Why is he so stupid?

Shadow hums, to his surprise. Sonic lifts his head. “Dude, I’m so fucking stupid. I know. Er, please don’t tell Maddie I cursed,”

Then, he actually smiles. Shadow. Smiling . A teasing, small smile, but a smile, nonetheless.

    He thinks, maybe… “Shadow?”

He stares at him with those piercing mahogany eyes. Damn.

“Can I… Can I hug you?”

He doesn’t answer. Great. He messed up. Again.

Shadow nods. He grins as widely as possible, which is a lot .

He hesitantly puts his arm around his neck. Uncomfortableee . “Don’t worry,” He mutters. “You’re safe,”

Sonic doesn’t understand why he says that, but it just, it came to him?

He isn’t the best comforting people, but he clearly does a good job, judging how Shadow’s grip on his fork loosens.

Maybe the day wasn’t that bad.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Either way, Sonic had to go. Shadow was waiting for him. He was letting the dark hedgehog down. He promised he’d be there by six; Sonic was breaking that promise with every second he let slip through his fingers.

Irritatingly, Sonic had to watch his pace as he wove his way through the streets. He couldn’t break the sound barrier, he couldn’t go too fast or he could put the people around him in danger. Sonic had to keep an even pace until he reached the edge of Central City. And then a little further, lest he shatter the windows of the last few building as he raced away at top speed. That crackly sound in his ears never got old but he couldn’t enjoy it. Not today.

By the time he skidded to a breathless stop outside Shadow’s house – well, almost against the door really – he was eleven minutes late.

    Eleven.
    ---
“To be honest, I hardly like letting Tails deal with my quills,” Sonic admitted quietly. “It… freaks me out.”

Ah, so that was it. Sonic had a weird thing about his quills. Which was even more understandable. If anyone going near the blue hedgehog’s quills made Sonic supremely uncomfortable, then Shadow would refrain. But still, he held firm that Sonic had to get someone to look at them right away. Their date could wait.

“The longer you leave them, Sonic, the more time they have to get worse,” Shadow insisted. “If you need to cancel today, that’s fine. I just want you to be safe. Because… because I love you.”
    ---
“Now, at risk of upsetting you again,” Shadow started carefully. “We do need to discuss what we’re going to do here, about your quills. I, personally, think you should go home to Miles.”

    “Shadow, I-”

“We can reschedule,” Shadow insisted. “Your health is more important. Miles is your brother; you’ve known him for a long time. I don’t care where you get help, just as long as you get it. And I don’t want you to worry about anything.”

He didn’t just mean his quills or the date. He meant Amy.

For a moment, Sonic fell silent. Was this Shadow’s way of trying to get rid of him? Or was he thinking too much about that again? Every time he thought something like that, Shadow seemed to prove the opposite was true. But how long would the dark hedgehog hold out before he got sick of Sonic? Shadow had said the L word to him before Sonic had gotten all weepy. And the dark hedgehog was always so honest. So maybe it was ok. Was rescheduling really so bad? Sonic still sort of thought that yes, it was. But Shadow didn’t. And the dark hedgehog seemed to sure…
    ---
“If… if you really want to help,” Sonic mumbled. “I can try.”

    Shadow’s eyes widened.

    “Are you sure?” Shadow asked.

“Only if you promise it’s not a bother to you.”

    “It’s not.”

“I also feel the need to warn you that I’m going to be really difficult,” Sonic warned. “It’s not on purpose, I swear, but… I have caused Tails a lot of trouble in the past.”

Sonic was being completely honest. The first time Tails had to take out a quill he’d bent, Sonic had flinched away from him and cut a deep gash across Tails’ finger. He was pretty sure the scar was still there, though he hadn’t seen Tails’ hands for a little while. And that had only been the first time; it didn’t ever seem to get any easier. Tails probably had quite a few cuts and scars on his hands. Not to mention the amount of times Sonic had run off halfway through, hidden away somewhere.

They’d gotten infected once. That had been hell.

    “I’ll be patient,” Shadow promised.
    ---
“No, nope, nuh-uh” he said. “I’m sorry, Shadow. I… I can’t do it.”

Shadow hummed, coming to a sudden realisation. Chaos, he wished he’d had it sooner…

“Are you touch averse, Sonic?” Shadow asked.

“No,” Sonic responded automatically, sharply, like a defence. “I mean, I don’t think so? Not… not all the time. I’m fine with Tails usually, so I can’t be.”

Shadow determined that, yes, Sonic was touch averse. Miles, being Sonic’s family, someone he was very close with, it would make sense that Sonic was more comfortable with his touch. And even then, considering Sonic’s “usually,” that wasn’t a guarantee either. Sonic had hugged Shadow on his birthday – but the stress and relief could account for that. He hadn’t let go of his hand on their first date, though he had flinched at the initial contact and his grip had been lax for a few minutes. And he had accepted the hug earlier… after first tensing. But Sonic seemed to think that, because there were exceptions, or that he’d warmed up to his touch, he didn’t have a real issue with it. Or perhaps Sonic didn’t want to admit he had a problem at all. Not that it was a big deal, a thing he needed to fix. That was for Shadow to be mindful of. Shadow would keep this all in mind going forward, letting Sonic decide when he was comfortable enough.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    1st Entry — Introductory Entry

Rouge and I had a discussion today, after which it was decided that we all will all attempt to keep a journal, starting today. That is what this notebook will be used for. Since this documentation is only for myself, I won't bother with introducing myself or my teammates.

Aside from the earlier discussion, nothing noteworthy has happened today.

45th Entry — Game night and thoughts about my team

We played boardgames and card games together. Rouge won most of them, so Omega accused her of cheating—which she absolutely did—and while they were distracted I cheated and won the final game. Rouge still has Omega and me combined beat in her number of wins. It was still fun.

The majority of positive things I've written down since I started consciously paying attention to that have been involving Rouge and/or Omega. In entry 36 I noted Team Dark as a good thing that happened to me. I did not realize how much it has improved my life. None of the positive things I noted would have happened without my team by my side. I knew to be thankful for my teammates, but I didn't realize to what extend they'd improved my life.

Rouge was right in saying I couldn't be all that unlucky simply because I'd met her. She found me after the incident with the Eclipse Cannon and created Team Dark. Without her, I likely wouldn't have Omega either. I likely wouldn't even be in control of my life the way I am now. I'd either still be stuck in an artificial coma or

Point is, without Team Dark, I wouldn't have what I do now. I wouldn't have two people I can trust. I wouldn't have two people who can respect when I want to be alone. I wouldn't have two people I can joke around with and actually tell things to. I couldn't imagine asking anyone else about how to deal with the past haunting me, or actually taking their advice seriously.

I know I don't always make it easy for them. They don't always make it easy for me either. We still get into fights, but we also find a way out of them. I wouldn't have the patience to do that for other people and I'm fairly sure they wouldn't put up with this much shit from others either. We're lucky to have each other. I am lucky to have them.
