“What is it? Haki.” Koby says it unsurely, rolling the syllables around in his mouth. “You keep telling me I have it but I don’t even know what that means.”
Shanks sits there for a second. “Oh.”
And suddenly, he feels like laughing. Because why would Koby know? Until a few weeks ago, he was just another toy soldier at the world government's disposal.
This whole time he thought the kid was doing it on purpose, projecting as loud as possible to get him and the crew to back off and leave him alone. Now he realizes that isn’t it at all.

“How do you know Koby?” the blond boy demands. Shanks ignores him, just like he ignores Garp and Bogard straightening in alarm at the same realization. He steps past them both, crossing just the few paces to crouch next to the small bed.
“Hello again,” he murmurs. “Do you remember me?”
Koby doesn't answer. Koby doesn't even blink.
One year after Marineford, Vice Admiral Garp calls Red Haired Shanks to ask for a favor.
