Everyone has a soul mark, a little tattoo that represents the person that you're meant to be with. It doesn't necessarily have to be romantic; the marks are just a representation of the person that you click with. For Dex he thought that his soulmate would be someone simple, someone who balanced out his anger. He finds exactly that in Derek Nursey, the only problem is that they absolutely hate each other.

The stairwell is chilly and quiet. Neither speaks and Dunk’s heart pounds in his ears. He wonders if Lyonel can hear it, echoing off the cold, dark stone. Up and up they go, higher into the tower. and Dunk wonders if they’re going to the roof so Lyonel can throw him off into the sea. He wonders if it would hurt to hit the waves, or if he would die on impact. Were I a bird or a fish, this would not be a problem, as I would just fly or swim away. Summary
Before leaving Australia, Chuck volunteered for a top-secret experiment combining cloning tech with Drift tech in the hopes of recreating a whole person down to the last memory. Herc didn't approve, but he didn't stand in the way, either. Knowing full well he would die in Pitfall the minute he realized he was paired with Pentecost, Chuck threw a monkey wrench into the experiment by doing a separate, non-sanctioned memory download.
The problem? He lied in the Drift. To his clone. About Raleigh.
Be warned, folks: here there be angst. That Chuck Hansen dies just like the movie, although it's offscreen. The story takes place six months later when the clone is ready to be unleashed upon the unsuspecting few still living in the Shatterdome.
