He meets Gustave’s eyes, a softness behind them. A fondness. “I do understand, Verso. I do.. I didn’t ask for this either. One minute I’m on the cliffs and I can feel Renoir’s blades though my chest, I’m dead before I hit the ground, and the next I’m waking up in bed next to Sophie.” Gustave pauses, his eyes shifting. “She loved him just like she loves you. She loves you, Verso”
“I know.. I know. He loved her too. I love her.” He mumbles, feeling himself get choked up.
Gustave clears his throat, his own hold on Verso’s hands tightening now. ”Like you loved me?” He asks, his voice timid and wavy. It’s like he’s not sure if Verso remembers.
His whole face changes, pulling his hands back and staring at him with wide glossy eyes. “She told you then?”
“She didn’t have to. When I was brought back.. When I died I remembered everything. You, the writers, the fire, losing you. Everything.” He ignores the ‘everything.’ He knows what that means. Verso knows how Gustave’s story ended. Inside and outside the canvas.

Dennis panics, licking his lips and quickly shoving the body off of him with a groan. “No.. No, I'm fine. Uhh thank you.” He mutters, his voice hoarse with misuse. It's been a while since he’s spoken to anyone real. Not since he left Nebraska.
“Can you stand?” The voice calls and this is when Dennis gets a better look at him. The man is tall, at least 6’0. His hair is cut back, longer at the back and sides with his fringe swooped back. His beard is long but maintained, grey coursing through it. His nose is curved at the tip and his jaw is defined or at least what he can see from the beard on his face. His eyes are soft, gentle. For once, the apartment he and Viktor shared is shrouded in silence. There’s no background music playing as someone cleans, there's not the slight scratch of a page being turned or the bubbling from the obnoxious pink kettle. There’s a thick fog of absence, of love that once filled the narrow halls and crowded rooms.
The bookshelves have gathered dust, piles of containers and take out wrappers have filled the counter. A death certificate sits on the dining table alongside the metal bracelet stamped with DNR. Sunlight pours in and settles on every piece of furniture and crevice like it’s waiting for Viktor to stand in it once more. Untouched funeral arrangements lay bare in the drawers, hidden away for next week's problem.
He can’t bring himself to let go of Viktor for good.

Summary
“We have a problem.” Satoru announces, slamming into Suguru’s studio two days later. He feels guilty. Like so so guilty.
“That so?” Suguru asks from his bed, lounging in a pair of sweats, his shirt hiked up. He scratches at his happy trail and glances over at Satoru. His demeanor changes instantly at whatever he sees on Satoru’s face. He swings his feet off his low bed, sitting up and leaning forward. “Satoru, what’s wrong?”
Satoru situates himself on the bed next to Suguru, crossing his legs and sitting so they’re facing each other. He meets Suguru’s eyes and cannot speak. Totally blank brain. Suguru touches his knee gently, probably about to say something helpful and kind like take your time or whatever you need.
For some reason, Satoru panics.
“I can’t come.” He announces, much louder than he needs to. “Unless I’m thinking about you.”
