He does not know of the monster that lives in the archives, of the plot spreading out with the Institute at its heart, and soon discovers the truth of the fate of the Institutes two illusive founders.
Thus beginnings the journey into secrets unknown, alongside his old friend, as he plunged deeper and deeper into the world of the supernatural, strange, and terrifying.

“Expect signs of PTSD,” the social worker warned him, “Extreme mood swings, risky behavior, aggression, and self-harm are all things to look out for. I would recommend counseling.”
Severus hasn’t seen any of that yet. Harry is extremely polite, neat, and personable. He likes gardening and football. He helps make grocery lists and cook dinner.
He knows there is more: clues that he’s missing and behaviors he’s overlooking, hints that Harry is struggling more that he’s letting on, but overall, Harry seems remarkably well-adjusted. It’s unnerving.
Because Severus knows that Harry spent a significant portion of his childhood confined to a single cupboard under the stairs. He knows that Harry was not fed consistently and did not have clean clothes that fit him. That he was hit.
By all accounts, Harry should be struggling. In the eight years since Severus first met Harry as an infant, his parents died, he was raised in an abusive household, and then forced to live with an estranged family friend he didn’t remember.
It worries Severus that he’s not seeing it, like Harry could be drowning right in front of him and he wouldn’t even know.

“Just a little nervous,” they fibbed. Truthfully, they were terrified. They weren’t sure that the supernatural was even real, but this trip to Sannikov Land would be the furthest they had ever gone from home. However, the Archivist needed them. She even had admitted to Michael that she was afraid, that she needed their help. The Archivist had always been so stoic and strong—for her to finally let down her guard around them was no small thing. They couldn’t let her down.
“I know.” Emma kept smiling, but her usual cheer had fled, leaving something cold and smug on her face. Unexpectedly, she took their hand and squeezed it. “You’ll be back before you know it.” Though words seemed comforting, her voice made it sound like a command.

Summary
Who watches the Watcher?
Gertrude Robinson left Michael Shelley to be consumed by the Spiral, saving the world—as far as she knew—at the cost of a single human life. She returned to a nearly empty Archive, the blood on her one remaining assistant's hands far more of a concern than that on her own.
And then Michael came back.
The Distortion couldn't do any real harm to Gertrude, and never really managed to do much minor harm in the years leading up to her death. But it stayed, and continued to do Michael Shelley's work, and so it was still working (for a certain value of working) in the Archives when a new Archivist was appointed to the position, alongside a fresh crop of archival assistants.
Perhaps there could be some merit to sticking around after all.
Or, season one with the addition of a fourth archival assistant, in the form of a Distortion that is desperately doing its best to keep these newbies from flinging themselves into death's jaws at the slightest opportunity, because archival assistants have no survival instincts as a general rule.
