  1. Summary

Can I get off without reliving history and let every echo just sing to itself?
Can I move on without knowing specifics while memories hum like a hive shaken out?
It’s a mirror, holy terror, taking focus off the horizon.
It’s a chorus reaching for us, swarming locusts wherever you go.
It’s a siren, muffled crying, breaking me down soft and slow.
It’s a diamond, my whole life is open just outside the door.
    It’s a mirror down.

  3. Summary

Not the peace of a cease-fire,
not even the vision of the wolf and the lamb,
    but rather
as in the heart when the excitement is over
and you can talk only about a great weariness.
I know that I know how to kill,
    that makes me an adult.
And my son plays with a toy gun that knows
how to open and close its eyes and say Mama.
    A peace
without the big noise of beating swords into ploughshares,
    without words, without
the thud of the heavy rubber stamp: let it be
light, floating, like lazy white foam.
A little rest for the wounds—
    who speaks of healing?
(And the howl of the orphans is passed from one generation
to the next, as in a relay race:
    the baton never falls.)

    Let it come
    like wildflowers,
    suddenly, because the field
    must have it: wildpeace.

    Summary

There’s a child of the Renaissance in Daniel's living room.

A contemporary of Michaelangelo is watching a thrifted Blu-Ray copy of Finding Nemo on his ten-year old television. He’s disturbingly engrossed. He likes the part where the little girl shakes the fish in the plastic bag; he laughs. He’s wearing socks with tiny rabbits printed on them, and they make hypnotic patterns as he rubs his feet together subtly, like a scheming evil fly.

Big biting insect, ominous presence, nighttime creature. Sharing the sofa with a nuclear warhead. The creep says, “The artistic direction of this film is superb, beloved.”

    Summary

You’re a gift, Marius had told him once, back when he was still a head taller than his Amadeo, wiping tears away with a less-than-gentle thumb. Get in there and start giving.

He stares at himself. The bruises Louis’ teeth left on his throat are gone, if they were ever there at all. Aside from a little red around the eyes, a little tremor in the hands, he’s beautiful. He’s always beautiful. Often he asks himself what it might have been like if his maker had allowed him to be anything else, anything but.

It’s been six hundred years and he still can’t come up with an answer.

    Summary

It was a modest grave. The headstone was small and understated, made of simple stone, but the quote beneath her name was undeniably expensive to carve.

I’d read somewhere that an environmentalist group raised the funds to bury her, though there was no funeral. There were no documentaries about her heroism. There were no celebrations or decorations on her grave. She had no mourners, just grateful children who saw her name in the paper and wanted to do some good.

That was ten years ago today.

Or: On the anniversary of Eva Stratt's death, a newly returned Ryland Grace visits her grave in the Netherlands.

    Summary

“You cannot leave me,” Armand whispers. “You can’t.”

    “Babe—”

“Promise,” Armand continues, fingers tangling in Daniel’s shirt. “Promise me.”

Daniel covers Armand’s shaking hand with his own and squeezes. “I promise.”

It doesn’t calm Armand’s racing heart in the slightest.

    Summary

I told you, Marius whispers, pressing himself against Armand’s back and curling a protective arm around his chest. He will never understand. He didn’t see what you suffered, my love. No one understands, no one but I saw how they treated you at that wretched brothel.

“You don’t understand,” Armand says weakly, and Marius hums his approval.

“Oh, I understand, alright,” Daniel sneers. “Is that why you wouldn’t turn me when I was younger? Missed Daddy that bad?”

    “No,” Armand says.

    Yes, Marius says.

“You’re wrong,” Armand repeats to both of them.
