Summary
Over the past few days, Ed has been keeping himself at a distance. Stede doesn’t blame him: he’s been distant too. Doesn’t stop Stede from missing him, though. Stede’s been a bad boyfriend, he thinks. In the summertime he was able to take Ed out on day trips, shower him with little gifts, take him dancing without a care in the world. Now that ice is growing thicker and thicker on their doorstep, he feels like it’s grown between him and Ed as well. Nothing seems to melt it.

Summary
In 1919, telegraph operator Stede Bonnet returns from the Great War with no memory and no voice, unable to recall what happened to break his mind. On his first night at home, he sees the translucent image of a man he knows is Ed in the mirror, except that this Ed comes from 1719.
Just as Stede knows that he's lost his Ed, this Ed has lost his Stede, and neither of them knows why. Reaching out across these broken lines of connection over two centuries, they'll work together to remember the endings of their stories, and to find what they've lost.

Ed’s used to visitors, though the novelty of his home has worn off in the last eighteen months or so, the uninvited guests becoming fewer and further between. He’s used to curiosity, and questions he rarely feels like answering. He’s used to people forgetting that this is, in fact, his home, and not some out of the way tourist attraction.

or: Stede takes a job as a remote forest fire lookout in the summer following his divorce, with a plan to find out who he is, and what he wants his life to be. With the help of the enigmatic lookout on the other side of the forest, he ends up getting more out of the experience than he could ever have hoped.

When he hears about an exclusive club that's using similar technology in a very different way, it just makes business sense to check it out. The fact that it's a sex club designed to read people's deepest unspoken desires and match them with aligned others, when Stede's never once felt aligned with his own wife, is incidental... until it's not.
Ed Teach built the Impossible Birds club to allow people to keep their distance while they fight their loneliness through other kinds of connection. The last thing he expected was to find a guest who matched and aligned with him, after years of hovering above it all. And the more times his anonymous guest comes back, and the more things he unlocks about himself, the more Ed can feel himself falling in a way he never planned.
But is reading each other's minds enough? This is a story about two absolutely perfect people learning to communicate in every conceivable way, in a world that's falling apart outside their dream.
