It goes like this.
Tony is five the first time he asks about Captain America. It’s July 4th, it’s been thirty years since the Captain’s ship went down in the ice, and Howard has been in foul mood all day. Tony asks his mama why he’s in such a mood, and she explains that he’s upset. He lost someone very important, she says, and even now he’s still looking for him. Her eyes go sad when she says it, distant and hazy in a way that suggests she knows Howard won’t stop looking until he’s successful. She doesn’t know that his obsession will be what gets him killed.
Tony asks if he can help Howard find the person he lost, and Maria just shakes her head.
“I’m sorry, bambino,” she murmurs. “I think he has to do this on his own.”
