And it broke D-16's spark to think about it.
Optimus Prime woke up as Orion Pax again, and though he panics at first, he realizes the opportunity at hand to fix where things went wrong. He wants to save D-16 from becoming Megatron and prevent the war that destroyed Cybertron. He would set things right this time, and he wouldn’t lose anyone else.
If only he would stop seeing those red optics on his best friend’s face.

Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”

Simon swallowed. “...Your arm is bleeding.”

The details of the job are pretty vague, but in the end, Simon agrees. It's a chance. At freedom. Life. No matter how slim or ridiculous the thought is in a dying universe. He doesn't know what to expect, but he certainly isn't prepared to wake up months later on a small ship with a crew of people that leave him with more questions than answers.

Eridian students do their darndest to write an epic space odyssey about their beloved Teacher Grace. I laughed, I nearly cried, I shook as I tried not to scream with delight as I read what could only be described as ‘entirely accurate fiction written by teenagers’They don’t understand humans, or science, or medical procedures. But goddamn did they have fun.

Grace could feel an empathetic echo ache on the left side of his own face, the thought of exposed gum and muscle forced to move, the cracking of newly formed scabs, enough to make him feel nauseous. Simon screwed his eye shut, “D- ehm-d?”
It took a moment of gathering the sounds and rolling through them in his head, brain making comparisons and approximations when they weren’t good enough to work the noises into one coherent phrase. Ah-mmmm I d-ehm-d? Am I d-ehm-d? Am I deh-d?
Am I dead?"

Still trying to save their respective planets, Grace and Rocky gain a new problem they need to solve: the body of impossible human being appearing in the Hail Mary's airlock. Things slowly get worse from there.

Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. All he knows is that he's in a universe with no stars and that an organization called the COI found the Hail Mary spinning out into deep space. Whatever happened here was bad. Irrevocably, inexplicably, inarticulably bad in a way that the most basal parts of his being wants nothing more than to escape from. But Grace can't turn away.
After encountering what appears to be a last hoo-ra emergency mission attempt from Earth caught up in the Hail Mary's wake, Grace and Rocky discover a single, severely injured human being quite literally encased in what Grace can only describe as a crime scene. A horror movie. And when he wakes up? He's mad. Really mad. Talking to the walls mad. Now they have to figure out just where he came from and why. Things are further complicated when all the newcomer (Simon, they learn) can talk about is missing planets, haunted oceans, and non-existent space stations. That and the really weird data they've been picking up on.
Maybe part of solving that is, much to Rocky's enthusiasm; both Grace and Simon slowly realizing how lonely they are.Series
